Chapter 7 - The River's Edge

The night was a howling nightmare of thunder, torrential rain, and jagged flashes of lightning that illuminated the dense pine woods surrounding the estate.

Noah, Eleanor, and Lily stumbled through the mud, cold rain plastering their clothes to their skin. Eleanor was shivering violently, her hospital gown soaked through, her bare feet bleeding from sharp pine needles and jagged stones, but she refused to drop Lily for a single second.

"This way!" Noah shouted over the roaring wind, aiming his water-damaged phone beam into the dark trees. "The river drainage canal! It leads to the public highway!"

Behind them, deep in the dark woods, the flashing red beams of tactical flashlights appeared. Vanessa’s security guards had mobilized, shouting to each other as they fanned out through the estate grounds.

"Spread out!" Vanessa’s sharp voice echoed through the trees via a bullhorn. "They are on foot! The woman is weak—she can't have gone far! Bring me the ledger!"

"Noah," Eleanor gasped, her breath coming in ragged, painful wheezes as her heart struggled against the cold and exertion. "I can't... I can't keep up with you. Take Lily... take the book and run..."

"No!" Noah yelled, grabbing her arm and slinging it over his shoulder, carrying half her weight himself. "We left you behind once because we thought you were dead! I am never leaving you again!"

They broke through the tree line, tumbling down a mud bank onto the rocky shore of the Blackwood River.

The river was swollen with the summer storm, a roaring torrent of black, foaming water crashing against jagged granite boulders. Spanning the river was an old, disused timber bridge that had once connected the Vance estate to the old county logging road.

"Across the bridge!" Noah urged, helping his mother down the slippery bank.

Suddenly, a bright, blinding beam of light cut through the rain from the opposite side of the bridge.

A black SUV tore out of the treeline on the county road, its high-beams locking onto them. The driver’s side door opened, and Dr. Thorne stepped out, holding an automatic shotgun.

"End of the line, Eleanor," Dr. Thorne called out over the roar of the river.

They turned back toward the woods, but three security guards emerged from the trees behind them, flashlights trained on their faces. Behind the guards walked Vanessa and Julian.

Vanessa was wearing a heavy oilskin coat, her face cold and victorious. Julian stood beside her, holding his chrome pistol, though his hand was shaking so violently the barrel trembled in the rain.

They were completely surrounded on the narrow wooden bridge.

"Give it up, Eleanor," Vanessa said, stepping onto the wooden planks of the bridge. "You're sick, you're freezing, and you have nowhere to go. Give me the ledger, and I'll make sure the children are unharmed."

Eleanor looked at Vanessa, then turned her gaze to Julian.

"Julian," Eleanor called out over the sound of the roaring water below. "Look at your children. Look at what you've done to them."

Julian looked at Lily, who was slowly waking up in Eleanor’s arms, crying softly in the cold rain. He looked at Noah, whose face was bruised, bleeding, but burning with a fierce, unyielding protection.

"Julian..." Vanessa warned, sensing the shift in the air. "Don't listen to her. Keep your weapon raised."

"Julian, please," Eleanor wept, taking a small step back toward the wooden railing of the bridge. "Remember who you were. Remember the man who built that cradle for Noah with his own hands. Is this what you want your legacy to be? A murderer for a pharmaceutical syndicate?"

Julian looked down at the gun in his hand. The rain poured off his slicked-back hair, running down his face like a torrent of artificial tears.

"I... I just wanted to save the company," Julian whispered, his voice cracking. "I just wanted to fix it..."

"You didn't fix anything!" Noah screamed at him. "You sold us out!"

Vanessa’s face contorted in disgust. "You pathetic coward," she spat at Julian. She reached into her coat, pulling out her own small, black revolver, and aimed it directly at Eleanor’s heart. "I'll finish this myself."

May you like

"No!" Julian suddenly yelled, his eyes snapping open with a sudden, desperate realization of the monster he had become.

Julian lunged sideways, throwing his entire weight into Vanessa just as she pulled the trigger!
