Chapter 2 - The Shadow over South Shore

The night air outside Belladonna was freezing, carrying the sharp scent of the Chicago River and exhaust fumes.

Emma didn't leave through the front entrance where two black SUVs with tinted windows were parked near the valet curb. Instead, she used the service alley door behind the kitchen, slipping past the dishwasher who was taking a cigarette break. She wore her faded winter coat over her black server uniform, her worn canvas tote bag slung over her shoulder.

She didn't take the EL train home. Instinct, built over years of surviving in rough neighborhoods, told her that public transit was a trap. Instead, she walked four blocks in the biting cold before flagging down a yellow cab, paying the driver with her tipped cash to take her to South Shore.

Her studio apartment was located on the third floor of a brick building with a squeaky iron fire escape and water stains on the hallway ceiling. The deadbolt clicked twice as she locked the door behind her.

Emma backed up against the heavy wooden door, slipping down until her knees touched the cold linoleum floor. Her body began to shake uncontrollable. The adrenaline that had carried her through the last two hours was finally burning off, leaving a hollow, sickening panic in its wake.

Lucas was poisoned.

Vanessa did it.

And Vanessa knows I saw her.

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out her phone. It was an old model with a cracked screen. She dialed the number written on Evelyn's card.

The phone rang twice.

"Speak," a voice answered. It wasn't Evelyn. It was a man's voice—rough, older, with a thick Italian accent.

"Mrs. Romano gave me this number," Emma whispered, her voice trembling. "My name is Emma Carter. I was the server at Belladonna tonight."

Silence stretched over the line for three agonizing seconds.

"Are you alone, child?" the man asked.

"Yes. I'm in my apartment."

"Listen to me carefully," the man said, his tone urgent and flat. "Vanessa Romano's father is Joseph Moretti. He controls three precinct captains in the Chicago Police Department and half the private security firms in the city. If Dante's men don't find you first, Moretti's men will. They are already pulling the security tapes from the restaurant."

Emma felt her breath hitch. "The security tapes?"

"Vanessa realized you switched the plates," the man said. "She noticed the position of the chocolate 'E' on the rim before Lucas ate it. She knows it was you. Leave your phone on the counter. Take your money, your identification, and step onto the fire escape right now."

"Who are you?" Emma cried softly.

"I am Leo," the man replied. "I have served Evelyn Romano for forty years. If you want to live to see tomorrow morning, get off the phone and move."

The line went dead.

Emma didn't hesitate. She dropped her phone onto the small kitchen table, grabbed her backpack, stuffed her nursing textbooks, her passport, and her mother’s gold wedding band inside, and ran toward the window.

She pushed up the wooden sash just as the heavy thud of boots echoed from the hallway outside her apartment door.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Chicago PD! Open the door!" a harsh voice yelled from the hallway.

Emma scrambled out onto the icy metal fire escape, pulling the window down behind her just as the sound of splintering wood filled her apartment.
