Chapter 9 - The Promise

One year later.
The Grand Ballroom at the Drake Hotel was filled with five hundred guests.
Soft orchestral music echoed beneath crystal chandeliers, and giant displays of white roses decorated every table. The city’s most prominent figures—politicians, business leaders, and historic Chicago families—were gathered for the annual Romano Foundation Gala.
At the head table sat Evelyn Romano, looking radiant in a emerald green gown, alongside Lucas, who was now running the family’s legitimate real estate developments.
At the center of the room stood Dante and Emma.
Emma looked breathtaking in a floor-length silver silk gown, her dark hair styled into an elegant updo, wearing a simple diamond pendant Dante had given her for her birthday.
Dante tapped his champagne glass with a silver spoon.
The ballroom fell into a respectful, absolute silence.
Dante stood up, holding his glass, his gray eyes shining as he looked down at Emma sitting beside him.
"Many people in this city know the Romano name for our history, our strength, and our power," Dante began, his voice deep and clear, echoing through the ballroom speakers. "But two years ago, our family was saved not by power, or money, or weapons. We were saved by the purest form of courage."
He looked around the room, his eyes scanning the powerful men and women in attendance.
"A young woman who owed nothing to us, who had every reason to look away, chose to risk her life to save my mother," Dante continued. "She showed us what true strength looks like."
Dante set his glass down on the table.
He turned toward Emma, reaching into his suit pocket, and dropped down onto one knee before the five hundred guests.
The entire ballroom gasped softly, then fell completely silent.
Dante opened a velvet box, revealing a magnificent oval-cut diamond ring that glittered like starlight under the chandeliers.
"Emma Carter," Dante said, his voice filled with deep, raw emotion. "You saw me when no one else did. You protected my family when we were blind. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the queen of my heart?"
Emma felt tears of pure joy spill down her cheeks. She looked at Evelyn, who was nodding with tears in her eyes, then at Lucas, who was smiling warmly, and finally back down at Dante—the man who had protected her, cherished her, and loved her unconditionally.

"Yes, Dante," Emma whispered, her voice carrying clearly through the quiet room. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"
Dante slipped the ring onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply as the entire ballroom erupted into wild, standing applause.
