Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The sound of breaking glass echoed like a gunshot through the silence of the Reynolds estate.
Ashley took three fast steps away from Marcus, her eyes wide as she looked at the shattered glass soaking into the rug, then at the thick legal documents held securely in my hands.
"Unpaid child support?" Ashley repeated, her eyes darting between Marcus and me. "Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars? Marcus, what is she talking about? You told me you were completely debt-free! You told me your ex-wife was a gold-digger who tried to drain your bank accounts!"
"She is a gold-digger!" Marcus shouted, his face turning from ash-gray to a dark, blotchy red. "Look at her! Look at how she showed up! Renting a helicopter? Wearing fake designer clothes? She spent eight years planning this just to embarrass me in front of my family!"
"I didn't rent the helicopter, Marcus," I replied smoothly, signaling to my kids to take off their coats and sit quietly on the bench by the door. They obeyed instantly, sitting side-by-side with perfect posture, watching their father with quiet curiosity. "I own the charter company. Along with the tech incubator in downtown Austin that recently acquired the debt portfolio of Summit Insurance."
Marcus went entirely rigid. "What?"
"You didn't think it was strange when your regional director denied your Christmas bonus last week?" I asked, taking a step toward him, letting the heel of my Louboutin pumps click deliberately against the floor. "You didn't wonder why your corporate line of credit was frozen three days ago?"
The room seemed to shrink around Marcus. His breathing became shallow and fast.
Eight years ago, when he packed his bags and left me in our tiny, mold-infested apartment in Dallas, I was working two retail jobs while six weeks pregnant with what I thought was one baby. When the doctor told me it was quadruplets, I called Marcus seventy-two times in twenty-four hours. He blocked my number, filed for divorce on grounds of 'irreconcilable mental instability,' and had his mother’s lawyer draft a agreement stating I would receive zero alimony if I didn't contest the divorce within thirty days.
I was too weak, too sick, and too terrified to fight back then. I signed the papers, packed my life into a rusted hatchback, and drove to Austin. I worked eighteen-hour days, slept on my friend's couch, and spent my late nights learning software architecture while my belly grew larger by the day.
When my four miracles were born, I made a vow to myself and to God: I would build an empire so massive that no man—especially not Marcus Reynolds—could ever threaten their security again.
"You... you own Summit's parent company?" Marcus stammered, his hand going to his tie, loosening it as if he were suffocating.
"I own sixty percent of the voting shares, Marcus," I corrected softly. "Which means I am your boss’s boss's primary stakeholder. But I didn't come here today to talk about your failing career. I came because you sent me a text message asking me to come to Christmas dinner for 'closure.'"
I looked over at Ashley, whose hand was trembling as she set her wine glass down on a side table.
"Tell me, Ashley," I said gently, my tone softening as I addressed the young woman. "Did Marcus show you the diamond ring he bought you five days ago?"
Ashley swallowed hard. "Yes. He... he spent eight thousand dollars on it."
"He put it on a high-interest store credit card under your name, didn't he?" I asked. "Check your credit monitoring app, Ashley. He used your Social Security number as a co-signer three weeks ago when you gave him your information for that 'joint travel insurance policy' he insisted on setting up."
Ashley’s color drained instantly. She pulled out her iPhone with frantic speed, her thumb flying across the screen. Within ten seconds, her mouth dropped open in absolute horror.

"Marcus..." she gasped, tears springing to her eyes. "There’s an eight thousand dollar charge from Solomon Jewelers... and a twelve thousand dollar line of credit opened for a BMW lease payment... under my credit profile?!"
"Ashley, babe, wait, let me explain!" Marcus lunged forward, trying to grab her hand, but Ashley delivered a slatted, backhanded slap across his cheek that echoed like thunder through the house.
