Chapter 9 - A Choice of Love

On a crisp, golden afternoon in October, our backyard in the Austin hills was transformed into a paradise of white roses, oak arbors, and soft string music.
Surrounded by fifty of our closest friends, colleagues, and family, Julian and I stood beneath a canopy of autumn leaves.
My four ten-year-old children stood right beside us—Leo and Ethan as Julian’s groomsmen, Maya and Chloe as my maid of honors.
"Kesha," Julian said, his eyes shining with deep emotion as he held my hands. "Ten years ago, you survived a storm that would have broken most people. You didn't just survive—you built an anchor for four beautiful souls. I promise to stand by you, to protect you, to honor you, and to love these children as my own for every day of my life."
When it was time to exchange rings, Julian didn't just place a band on my finger. He turned to face the four kids, pulling four small velvet boxes from his coat pocket.
He knelt down in front of them, opening the boxes to reveal four matching silver lockets, each engraved with their initials on the front and a picture of our family inside.
"Leo, Ethan, Maya, Chloe," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "I didn't give you life, but life gave me the greatest gift in the world when it brought me to you. Will you permit me to be your dad?"
All four kids threw their arms around Julian's neck at the same time, knocking him backward onto the grass in a chaotic, laughter-filled pile of hugs and happy tears.
The entire crowd erupted in cheers and applause.

Sitting in the front row, David Vance looked at me with a proud, warm smile, raising his glass in a quiet toast.
I looked up at the endless Texas sky, feeling the warm breeze brush against my face, knowing that the long journey that began in a cold, lonely apartment eight years ago had finally brought us to where we belonged.
