Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

The immediate aftermath of the boardroom showdown was a tactical victory, but wars are rarely won in a single afternoon. Eleanor signed her resignation under the strict condition that the criminal charges remain unfiled, but I knew my mother too well. She was a master of asymmetrical warfare, and she wasn't going to surrender her empire to four six-year-olds without a fight.

That evening, I returned to the apartment with a team of high-end private security guards, placing them at every entrance of the building.

When I opened the door, I found Mara sitting in the library, looking through old photograph albums I had left out. The boys were asleep in the guest bedrooms, fed, bathed, and safe.

"She resigned," I said quietly, sitting across from her in a matching leather armchair.

Mara looked up, her green eyes filled with a complex mixture of relief and fear. "Just like that?"

"She had no choice. I found the financial paper trail she used to set you up." I reached out, gently placing my hand over hers. She flinched slightly, then relaxed into my touch, her fingers wrapping around mine. "Mara... I am so sorry. For every night you had to struggle, for every hour you wondered how you were going to feed our boys. I was living in luxury while you were working shifts in a storage room."

"Julian, stop," Mara said, tears welling in her eyes. "You didn't know. I was angry at you for years because I thought you authorized it. I thought you chose your family's money over us. But seeing you in that bathroom... seeing the look on your face when you realized who they were... I knew instantly that you were just as much a victim of her games as I was."

We sat in silence for a long moment, the quiet hum of the city echoing outside.

"Where do we go from here?" she asked softly.

"First, we build a real life for them," I said firmly. "I bought a estate in Westchester two years ago—a place away from the city, away from the cameras. I want you and the boys to move there tomorrow. It's secure, private, and has enough space for four boys to run until they're exhausted."

Mara hesitated. "And what about us, Julian? We aren't the same people we were six years ago. I'm not the starry-eyed college student who fell for the handsome business major, and you aren't just a guy with a bright future. You're running an empire, and I have four children to protect—even from the madness of your world."

"I don't expect you to fall back in love with me overnight," I admitted, my voice raw. "All I ask is for the chance to earn your trust again. Let me be a father to Milo, Mason, Max, and Micah. Let me prove to you that the man you loved is still here."

Before she could answer, my encrypted satellite phone rang. It was Vance.

"Julian," Vance's voice was tense. "We have a problem. Eleanor didn't go home after the board meeting. Her car was spotted entering the law offices of Sterling & Croft. They are preparing an emergency ex-parte petition for custody of the boys."

I tightened my grip on the phone. "On what grounds?"

"Unfit mother," Vance said grimly. "They are claiming Mara's financial instability, her history of moving between temporary housing, and her lack of steady employment make her an immediate danger to the children's welfare. And because you aren't legally listed on their birth certificates yet, Eleanor is trying to gain temporary guardianship as their paternal grandmother."
