Chapter 8 - Reckoning
Judge Vance didn't even delay her ruling. She slammed her gavel down with a crack that sounded like a thunderclap.
"The petition for temporary guardianship filed by Eleanor Whitaker is denied with prejudice," the judge stated firmly. "Furthermore, this court finds that Eleanor Whitaker's actions constitute a systematic campaign of harassment and intimidation. I am issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order against Mrs. Whitaker. She is prohibited from coming within one thousand feet of Mara Jennings, Julian Whitaker, or the four minor children."
Judge Vance then turned her gaze toward Mara and me, her expression softening.
"Full legal and physical custody of Milo, Mason, Max, and Micah Jennings is awarded jointly to Mara Jennings and Julian Whitaker. Furthermore, I am directing the clerk to issue updated birth certificates officially recognizing Julian Whitaker as their father."
Tears streamed down Mara’s face as she buried her head in my chest. I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tightly as months of tension evaporated from my body.
Across the aisle, Eleanor stood frozen, watching as her entire authority collapsed around her. She looked at me, her eyes pleading for a brief second—hoping, perhaps, for a shred of filial loyalty.
I looked back at her with cool detachment. "It’s over, Eleanor. You lost."
As my security team cleared a path through the media frenzy outside the courthouse, Arthur Sterling approached Vance in the corridor with a white flag.
"Julian," Sterling said, looking beaten. "Eleanor wants to settle the corporate dispute quietly. She will surrender her remaining voting shares in Whitaker Enterprises to a blind trust for your sons if you agree not to pursue the criminal embezzlement charges."

I paused at the top of the courthouse steps, looking out at the city below.
"Tell her she has twenty-four hours to sign the stock transfers and leave New York," I said coldly. "If she ever sets foot in this state again, the District Attorney gets the file."
