Chapter 8 - The Foundation

With Julian’s absolute backing, I threw myself into creating the Samuel & Buster Foundation—a massive, state-of-the-art rescue and rehabilitation center for abused animals and at-risk youth in Chicago.

We transformed a twenty-acre plot of land near the lake into a sanctuary. It featured modern veterinary facilities, therapy dog programs for traumatized children, and employment opportunities for people trying to rebuild their lives.

On opening day, hundreds of people filled the sunshine-lit courtyard.

Buster, now wearing a custom leather collar with a gold tag that read Chief Happiness Officer, trotted happily among the crowd, getting head scratches from children and former shelter workers alike.

Julian stood beside me as I cut the ceremonial ribbon.

“Look at what you built,” he whispered, his arms wrapping around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“We built it,” I corrected softly, leaning back against his chest. “You gave me the power to do this.”

“No, Sadie,” Julian said, kissing my cheek. “You had the power all along. I just gave you the stage you deserved.”
