Chapter 5 - The Hunt Begins

The two gunmen raised their carbines, but Mark didn't give them the chance to acquire their targets.
He leaned around the brick corner and fired three rapid rounds from his Glock. The lead shooter took two hits to his heavy body armor, staggering back into the cellar pit, his rifle firing a wild burst into the night sky.
I sprinted low across the patio, using the blinding white flare smoke as cover.
I closed the distance between myself and the second gunman before he could bring his weapon to bear. I slammed the steel claw of the halligan bar into his shoulder, driving him back against the iron cellar door with a sickening crunch. The man dropped his rifle, clutching his broken collarbone, but pulled a combat knife from his tactical vest.
I caught his wrist, twisted his arm over my knee until the bone snapped, and slammed his head hard against the iron frame. He went limp, dropping into the dirt.
"Julian's getting away!" Emily screamed, pointing toward the tree line.
Julian was already sprinting through the dark woods behind our property, accompanied by the sniper who had abandoned his position in the trees.
I picked up the dropped tactical carbine, checked the magazine, and looked at Mark. "Stay with Emily and the police. Keep Lily safe."
"Ryan, no!" Emily grabbed my arm, her eyes wide with terror. "He has an army! You can't go after him alone!"

"He set fire to our home while our daughter was inside, Emily," I said, my voice dead and cold. "He doesn't get to board that plane."
I broke free from her grip and plunged into the dark, freezing woods after the man who had tried to erase my family from the face of the earth.
