Chapter 7 - The Tower of Rust

Inside the grain elevator, the air was thick with the dust of dried corn, mold, and rot.

Water dripped from high, vaulted iron ceilings eighty feet above, echoing like slow footsteps through the dark, echoing chamber.

I stepped through the shattered door frame, my carbine raised, my tactical light sweeping the rusted catwalks and massive steel storage silos towering over the floor.

"Julian!" my voice cut through the dark.

A sharp clatter sounded from the catwalk twenty feet above my head.

I looked up just in time to see Julian dragging his bleeding leg up a narrow iron spiral staircase leading to the high loading gantry. He had lost his wool coat; his white dress shirt was torn and covered in grease, but he refused to drop the pelican case.

"There's nowhere left to run, Vance!" I yelled, stepping onto the bottom rung of the spiral stair. "The police have the perimeter locked down! Your pilot is dead or running!"

Julian stopped on the middle landing, leaning against the iron railing, breathing heavily. He pulled a silver snub-nosed revolver from his shoulder holster and pointed it down at me.

"I didn't spend eight years hunting Emily to end up in a Texas prison, Miller!" he snarled, his voice losing its cultured polish, turning wild and unhinged. "This case holds three hundred million dollars! With this, I can buy a new name, a new life, a new country!"

"That money belonged to a vault thirty years ago!" I stepped up three rungs, keeping my carbine trained on his chest. "And my daughter almost died for it!"

"Your daughter is a nobody!" Julian shrieked, squeezing the trigger.

BANG.

The bullet punched into the iron tread six inches from my boot.

I didn't flinch. I fired a short three-round burst at the iron railing right below his arm. The heavy impact tore the railing away from its bolts, sending a shower of rusted iron and sparks into Julian's face.

Julian screamed as he lost his balance, dropping his revolver. He fell backward onto the narrow catwalk, the heavy pelican case slipping from his fingers, tumbling over the guardrail.

The case hit the concrete floor sixty feet below with a loud, hollow thud.

The heavy steel latches snapped open on impact.

Instead of stack after stack of untraceable three-hundred-million-dollar federal reserve bonds, thousands of blank, water-damaged sheets of aged parchment paper spilled across the filthy concrete floor.

The vault beneath my house had been emptied decades ago.

Julian stared down at the sea of blank paper fluttering across the floor in the draft, his mouth agape, his eyes wild with absolute, incomprehensible disbelief.

"No..." he whimpered, dropping to his knees on the iron catwalk. "No, no, no! It was there! The archivist swore it was there!"

"You burned my home for garbage, Vance," I said, stepping onto the catwalk landing, standing directly over him with my weapon lowered.

Julian looked up at me, his face pale, his eyes completely hollowed out by the realization that his grand, obsessive scheme was nothing more than an illusion.

He slowly raised his hands, his fingers trembling violently in the cold air.

"Shoot me," he whispered, a bitter, defeated laugh escaping his throat. "Go ahead, Miller. Be the hero. Finish it."

I looked down at the man who had tormented my wife, who had nearly killed my daughter, and who had brought hell to my quiet street.

I pulled the magazine from my carbine, let it drop onto the iron catwalk, and racked the bolt to clear the live chamber.

"No," I said, looking into his broken eyes. "Dying in this dirt is too easy for you. You're going to sit in a federal box for the rest of your life, knowing that Emily and Lily are waking up every morning without ever hearing your name again."

From the floor below, the bright red-and-blue lights of twenty Dallas police cruisers flooded through the broken doorway, illuminating the rusted interior of the grain elevator like a stage.

Detective Reed stepped through the entrance, flanked by twelve armed officers, their weapons raised toward the catwalk.

"Julian Vance!" Reed’s voice echoed over his bullhorn. "Keep your hands where we can see them! You are under arrest for arson, attempted murder, and federal bank fraud!"

Julian didn't move. He sat in the rust and dirt of the catwalk, weeping silently as the officers climbed the stairs to wrap heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
