Chapter 3 - The Forty-Eighth Floor

At 7:30 AM the following morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper at 300 North Wacker Drive stood tall against a crisp, clear Chicago sunrise.
In the grand marble lobby of Northstar Table Group’s corporate headquarters, security guards in tailored blazers monitored the turnstiles. Outside, a sleek black Lincoln Town Car pulled up to the curb.
The driver, dressed in a sharp suit, opened the rear door.
Evelyn stepped out first. She was no longer wearing the soaked gray coat or secondhand boots. She wore a bespoke charcoal wool coat over a tailored navy suit, her dark hair pinned in a flawless twist, and her diamond earrings catching the morning light. Her presence was commanding, radiating power and quiet authority.
From the other side of the car, Marcus stepped out, holding Lily’s hand. He wore a borrowed dark suit jacket that Evelyn’s team had delivered to his apartment at 5:30 AM, along with a warm coat for Lily. Marcus looked around the opulent lobby, his eyes wide with confusion and rising awe.
“Evelyn...” Marcus stammered, looking at her attire, then at the building emblem above the doors. “What... who are you?”
Evelyn stopped, turning to face him. She looked at Marcus, then knelt down to Lily’s level, smoothing the little girl’s collar.
“Last night, Marcus, you told me that the CEO of this company sits in her tower looking at spreadsheets and doesn't know what happens in her restaurants,” Evelyn said gently.
Marcus froze. His breath hitched in his chest as the reality hit him like a lightning bolt. “You’re... you’re Evelyn Hart.”
“I am,” she replied honestly. “And you were right. I let corporate buffers blind me to what was really happening under my mother’s name. But today, with your help, I’m fixing it.”
Lily looked up at the massive building, then at Evelyn’s sparkling earrings. “Are you a queen?”
Evelyn laughed softly, her eyes warming. “No, sweetie. I’m just a woman who owes your daddy a bowl of soup.”
Evelyn stood up, her expression shifting instantly into boardroom-ready steel. “Follow me.”
They walked through the lobby. The security guards immediately straightened up, bowing their heads. “Good morning, Ms. Hart!”
Evelyn bypassed the public elevators and led Marcus and Lily into the private executive express lift. Keycard swiped. The elevator shot upward to the forty-eighth floor.
When the doors opened, Dana Brooks was waiting with a stack of thick leather binders. She didn't look surprised to see Marcus and Lily; she simply handed Evelyn a hot coffee and a tablet.
“Richard Hayes and the regional managers are already in the main boardroom,” Dana briefed quickly. “Brent Cole was invited via video link from Store 118 to present his 'exemplary' low-labor cost model to the board.”
“Is the financial audit on store 118 complete?” Evelyn asked, marching down the carpeted hallway.
“Yes,” Dana replied, a cold smile touching her lips. “We found three hundred thousand dollars in off-the-books cash transactions traced directly to Brent Cole’s personal accounts over two years. And Richard Hayes signed off on every single audit report without checking.”
Evelyn paused outside the heavy double mahogany doors of the primary boardroom. She turned to Marcus.
“When we go in there,” Evelyn whispered, “I want you to sit right beside me. Don't say anything until I ask you to.”

Marcus looked at the massive mahogany doors, then down at Lily, who gave his fingers a gentle squeeze. He took a deep breath, squared his broad shoulders, and nodded. “I’m with you, Evelyn.”
Evelyn pushed the doors open.
