Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Past

Two weeks after the gala, a sudden storm hit the Mercer family dynamic.
A high-profile scandal broke in the national news. Brent Cole and Richard Hayes, facing severe federal fraud charges, attempted to save themselves by filing a civil lawsuit against Northstar Table Group and Marcus Vance personally.
Their lawyers claimed that Marcus had colluded with Evelyn to engineer Brent’s firing, alleging that Marcus had orchestrated the "soup incident" as a staged publicity stunt to force corporate restructuring.
The tabloid media picked up the story immediately:

Reporters swarmed Marcus’s townhouse neighborhood, thrusting cameras into his face as he tried to take Lily to school.
In the corporate offices, several conservative board members panicked, calling for Marcus to be temporarily suspended pending an internal investigation.
Evelyn was furious. She called an immediate press conference in the main auditorium of Northstar Tower.
Over fifty news outlets filled the room. Cameras flashed continuously as Evelyn stepped up to the podium, flanked by her legal team.
A senior reporter stood up immediately. “Ms. Hart! Is it true that Marcus Vance knew you were undercover before he offered to buy you that bowl of soup?”
Evelyn raised her hands, demanding silence. The room quieted down instantly.
“On November 14th,” Evelyn spoke clearly into the microphones, “I walked into Store 118 wearing a wet, twelve-dollar coat. I had no ID, no corporate badge, and no security detail. Marcus Vance had never met me in his life.”
She gestured to the large projection screen behind her.
“What you are seeing now is the complete, unedited audio and video feed from Store 118’s security cameras from that night,” Evelyn announced.
The security footage played on national television—showing Brent Cole intentionally dropping the soup, Marcus stepping between Brent and Evelyn, and Marcus handing over his last seven dollars to buy a stranger a warm meal.
Evelyn leaned closer to the podium microphone, her eyes burning with fierce conviction.
“Marcus Vance did not know I was the CEO,” Evelyn said, her voice trembling with deep emotion. “He thought I was a forgotten, helpless woman standing in the rain. He risked his job, his income, and his stability because he believes in human dignity.”
She looked directly into the news cameras.
“The lawsuit filed by Brent Cole and Richard Hayes is a pathetic attempt by corrupt men to evade justice. Northstar Table Group is filing counter-countersuits today for defamation, fraud, and malicious prosecution. And as long as I am the CEO of this company, Marcus Vance will remain our Director of Community Affairs.”
The auditorium erupted into applause from ethical journalists and corporate staff standing in the back.

Standing in the wings of the auditorium, Marcus watched Evelyn defend him with such fierce, unwavering loyalty. Tears welled in his eyes as he realized that the woman standing at that podium was not just his boss or his friend.
She was the love of his life.
