Chapter 7 - The Grand Reopening

With Elias’s immense resources and a small army of contractors working twenty-four hours a day, Golden Hearth Bakery was rebuilt in less than three weeks. It was more beautiful than before—the vintage charm remained, but the kitchen was now state-of-the-art, and a beautiful new glass storefront proudly displayed her name.

The grand reopening was a media sensation. Elias had used his public relations connections to turn the arson attack into a story of resilience.

The street outside the bakery was packed with customers, food critics, and neighborhood residents who loved Maggie.

Maggie stood behind the counter, wearing a pristine new chef’s jacket with Golden Hearth Bakery embroidered in gold thread across her chest. Her confidence radiated through the room. She was no longer just a survivor; she was a force.

As the afternoon rush began to slow, a familiar figure walked through the door.

It was Sloane Mercer. But she looked entirely different. The expensive waves were gone, replaced by a simple ponytail. She wore no jewelry, and her face was pale. She walked up to the counter, her eyes downcast.

Maggie braced herself, Noah moving instantly to her side.

"Ms. Hayes," Sloane said, her voice shaking. "I... I came to apologize."

Maggie stared at her. "An apology won't fix my broken window, Sloane."

"I know," Sloane whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "My father's business went under last week. Elias Han bought out his shares for pennies. We lost everything. Elias told my father that the only way he would let us keep our house was if I came here, publicly, and begged for your forgiveness."

Maggie looked out the window and saw a familiar black sedan parked across the street. Elias was watching from behind the tinted glass. He had dismantled an entire family’s fortune to force this woman to her knees for Maggie.

"I don't want you to beg, Sloane," Maggie said, her voice firm and full of dignity. "I want you to leave this bakery and never look at another person and think you are better than them because of their size, their clothes, or their neighborhood. Your apology is accepted. Now, please leave."

Sloane nodded quickly, turning and fleeing the shop, her lesson learned at the highest possible cost.
