Chapter 3 - The Trap is Set

Wednesday morning arrived with an ominous, overcast sky hanging over Chicago. Inside the Whitmore Grand, the pressure was mounting.
Emily walked into the employee locker room at 7:30 AM, her eyes dark from lack of sleep. She had spent half the night at her grandmother’s bedside, watching the old woman struggle to breathe. Every minute felt like a ticking clock counting down to Thursday morning.
As she pulled her yellow housekeeping apron over her head, her locker door was slammed shut with a loud bang.
Emily jumped.
Vanessa stood there, leaning against the rows of lockers, chewing gum with a triumphant smirk on her face. Beside her stood Derek, holding a clipboard.
"Morning, charity case," Vanessa said smoothly.
"Derek, Vanessa. What do you want?" Emily asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Derek stepped forward, tapping his pen against his clipboard. "We're making some scheduling adjustments, Emily. Starting today, you’re assigned to the VIP Penthouse Suites on the 20th floor."
Emily blinked in surprise. The Penthouse Suites were usually reserved for senior staff who earned high tips. "The 20th floor? But that’s Vanessa’s section."
"Vanessa is taking a supervisor shift today," Derek said coldly. "The Penthouse suite is occupied by Lord Alistair Vance, a major investor in the hotel group. He requested absolute perfection. One smudge, one speck of dust, and he’ll complain directly to the board."
Emily felt a knot form in her stomach. Lord Vance was notorious among the staff. He was an arrogant, ill-tempered billionaire who treated service staff like dirt and frequently demanded that employees be fired for minor infractions.
"Why are you putting me up there?" Emily asked, staring straight into Derek's eyes. "You're trying to set me up to fail."
Derek leaned in, his smile cold and merciless. "I'm giving you an opportunity to prove yourself, Emily. But let me make one thing clear. If Lord Vance complains about your service today, I won't just fire you. I’ll report you for gross negligence, and you won't get a dime of severance or unemployment."
Vanessa snickered behind her hand. "Better polish those shoes, Emily. Lord Vance hates poor people."
They turned and walked out of the locker room, laughing softly together.
Emily leaned against her locker, taking a deep, shuddering breath. She knew it was a trap. Lord Vance was impossible to please. If he threw a tantrum, Derek would use it as a legal excuse to fire her on the spot without paying her earned wages.
"Do not let them rattle you, Miss Emily."
Emily looked up. Walter was standing near the locker room entrance, holding a fresh stack of clean towels. He was back in his faded gray janitor uniform, looking as humble as ever, but his eyes were filled with calm reassurance.
"Walter," Emily breathed. "Did you hear them?"
"I heard," Walter said quietly, walking over. "Lord Vance is indeed a difficult man. He suffers from a terminal case of self-importance."
Emily let out a stressed, breathless laugh. "You can say that again. He fired a maid last year because her shoes squeaked on his hardwood floor."
"Then make sure your soles are clean," Walter said with a subtle twinkle in his eye. "And remember, Emily... men who build their power on fear are extraordinarily fragile when confronted with absolute truth."
Emily looked at the old man, feeling her pulse settle down slightly. "Thanks, Walter. I’ll do my best."
"I know you will," Walter said warmly. "Oh, by the way... did you check your email or call the hospital this morning?"
Emily paused, pulling her phone out. "No, I came straight from the bus. Why?"
"Just a feeling," Walter said, winking gently. "An old man's intuition. Go check on your floor. I will be working nearby on the 19th floor if you need anything."
Emily unlocked her phone screen and opened her email app. Her eyes widened as she saw an automated notification from the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Patient Portal, sent at 6:00 AM.
She clicked on it.
Dear Miss Carter, We are pleased to inform you that a deposit of $10,000.00 has been applied to the surgical account for Evelyn Carter, courtesy of the Whitmore Charitable Trust Hardship Grant. The surgical suite for Thursday at 8:00 AM is now fully confirmed.
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. The world seemed to stop spinning. She read the email once, twice, three times.
"Oh my god," she gasped, tears instantly flooding her eyes. "Oh my god!"
"Good news?" Walter asked gently, a soft smile playing on his lips.
"The hospital... someone paid the deposit!" Emily cried, laughing through her tears as she held her phone out. "Look! The Whitmore Trust! They cleared her surgery for tomorrow morning!"
Walter looked at the screen, feigning mild pleasant surprise. "Well, look at that. A genuine miracle."
Emily threw her arms around Walter’s neck, hugging the old janitor tightly. "I can't believe it! My grandmother is going to have her surgery!"
Walter hugged her back gently, patting her shoulder with paternal tenderness. "She is going to be just fine, Emily. Now... go conquer the 20th floor."
Emily wiped her eyes, filled with a sudden, surging wave of hope and determination. "I will!"
She rushed out toward the elevators, her spirit soaring.
Walter watched her go, his gentle smile slowly fading into a sharp, decisive expression. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his encrypted phone, and dialed Marcus.

"Marcus," Walter commanded. "Inform Lord Alistair Vance that I will be visiting his suite on the 20th floor in twenty minutes. Tell him if he utters a single rude word to Emily Carter today, I will personally cancel his group's investment portfolio with the Whitmore Conglomerate."
"Understood, Mr. Whitmore," Marcus chuckled. "He will be on his best behavior."
