Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Derek stared at Walter, then let out a loud, contemptuous laugh that echoed off the high ceilings of the penthouse suite.

"My resignation letter?" Derek snickered, turning to Vanessa, who joined in with a fake, high-pitched giggle. "Are you senile, old man? You’re a temp janitor! I can fire you with a single phone call to HR."

"Derek, shut your mouth!" Lord Vance suddenly roared, his face turning bright red with rage.

Derek froze, his laughter dying in his throat. "Lord Vance... sir? Why are you shouting at me? I'm protecting your suite from these low-class—"

"Silence!" Vance stepped forward, pointing a trembling finger at Derek’s nose. "You are speaking to Walter Whitmore, founder, chairman, and majority shareholder of the Whitmore Hotel Conglomerate! You arrogant, blind fool!"

The room went dead quiet.

Vanessa dropped her clipboard. It hit the marble floor with a loud, clattering bang. She stared at the old man in the gray uniform, her face turning pale white as if all the blood had been drained from her body.

"W-What?" Derek stammered, his eyes darting wildly between Vance and Walter. "No... no, that's impossible. He’s... he’s a homeless guy! Emily brought him in off the street!"

"I came through the employee entrance because I wanted to see how my staff were treated from the ground up, Mr. Lawson," Walter said, his voice quiet, steady, and heavier than iron. "And over the last three days, I have observed extortion, cruelty, verbal abuse, and the systematic theft of employee hardship funds."

Derek swallowed hard, a sudden slick coat of cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Hardship funds? Sir, I... I don't know what you're talking about! There’s been a misunderstanding!"

"There is no misunderstanding," Walter stated coldly. "My legal team and federal auditors have spent the last twenty-four hours going through your accounts. Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, the entire executive board, the press, and the local police department will be present in the Grand Ballroom."

Walter stepped closer to Derek, looking down at the trembling manager. "I suggest you spend tonight organizing your legal defense, Mr. Lawson. You are going to need every penny you embezzled."

Vanessa backed away toward the door, her hands shaking violently. "Derek... Derek, what did you do?"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Derek snapped nervously, wiping sweat from his eyes. He looked at Walter, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered, replaced by sheer panic. "Mr. Whitmore... please! I’ve served this hotel for four years! I made a mistake, but I can explain—"

"Save it for tomorrow morning, Mr. Lawson," Walter cut him off smoothly. "Get out of this suite. Now."

Derek stared at Walter, then at Emily, who stood beside the billionaire owner. The quiet maid he had threatened hours ago was now standing beside the most powerful man in the building. Realizing his world had just collapsed, Derek turned and fled out the door, with Vanessa scrambling frantically after him.

Lord Vance wiped his forehead with a silk handkerchief, bowing deeply to Walter. "Mr. Whitmore... I assure you, I had no knowledge of their misconduct! I am appalled! Absolutely appalled!"

"I know, Alistair," Walter said calmly. "Thank you for your cooperation today."

"Of course! Anything for the Whitmore family!" Vance bowed again, then looked at Emily with profound respect. "Miss Carter, if you ever require anything... anything at all... please do not hesitate to ask."

"Thank you, Lord Vance," Emily said softly, still trying to absorb the surreal reality of the situation.

Walter turned to Emily, his cold demeanor instantly softening into the warm, paternal expression she knew so well. "Come, Emily. Let us go visit your grandmother. I have arranged a private car to take us to Northwestern Memorial Hospital."

Emily looked at the mop and bucket sitting near the door. "But... my shift..."

Walter smiled warmly, taking her hand gently. "Miss Emily... I believe your days as a housekeeper are officially over."
