Chapter 10 - The New Meridian

One year after the incident on the twenty-third floor.

The top floor of Meridian Tower had undergone a total transformation.

The exclusive executive lounge—once reserved only for senior vice presidents and high-stakes clients—had been redesigned into an open, sunlit community space accessible to every worker in the building, from high-frequency traders to the night-shift sanitation staff.

It was 2:00 PM on a crisp autumn Thursday.

Riley Anderson stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city skyline, holding a steaming ceramic mug of fresh coffee.

She turned around as the heavy glass doors opened.

Daniel Anderson walked in, looking healthier and lighter than he had in years. Beside him was Martha Evans, holding an iPad filled with operational safety logs for the company’s new Midwest distribution hub.

"All twenty-eight facility reports are green, Riley," Martha said, tapping the screen with a confident finger. "The new safety gear has arrived in Chicago, and we’ve officially implemented the thirty-minute mandatory paid break rule across all shift schedules."

"Great work, Martha," Riley smiled, handing her a mug of tea. "How are the knees feeling?"

"Better," Martha chuckled, taking a sip. "It’s amazing how much less your joints hurt when you aren't carrying the weight of the whole floor on your back."

Daniel looked at his daughter, his eyes shining with boundless pride.

"The board approved the new governance charter this morning, Riley," Daniel said softly. "Ten percent of all corporate net profits will now be permanently directed into the frontline worker profit-sharing pool. You’ve completely reshaped the culture of this firm."

"We reshaped it, Dad," Riley corrected gently, looking over at the wall near the entrance of the lounge.

Mounted on the polished mahogany wall was a large, beautifully framed brass plaque. It didn't list company stock prices or financial milestones.

It bore a simple message written in gold lettering:

DIGNITY IS NOT A PRIVILEGE GRANTED BY MANAGEMENT. IT IS THE FOUNDATION UPON WHICH THIS COMPANY STANDS.

Dedicated to the Frontline Workers of Anderson Meridian Group.

A young, newly hired custodial worker—a girl in her early twenties wearing a clean navy uniform—walked into the lounge with a dusting cloth. She looked hesitant, seeing the CEO and the Vice President standing near the window.

Riley smiled warmly, walking over to her.

"Hi," Riley said gently. "I'm Riley."

"I... I know who you are, Miss Anderson," the girl murmured shyly. "I’m sorry to intrude, I was just coming to wipe down the glass..."

"You aren't intruding," Riley said, stepping aside and making room for her by the sunlit window. "This room belongs to you just as much as it belongs to anyone else in this building."

Riley picked up a fresh ceramic cup from the counter, poured a hot cup of coffee, and handed it to the young worker with a genuine, welcoming smile.

"Here," Riley said softly. "Careful. It’s hot."
