Chapter 7 - The Downfall

By 12:30 PM, the corporate offices of Anderson Meridian Group were in total lockdown.

Word had spread through the twenty-third floor like wildfire. The junior account executives who had laughed when Zach spilled coffee on Riley were now sitting at their desks in absolute, petrified silence, staring at their computer screens as armed corporate security officers posted themselves at every exit door.

In the executive suite on the nineteenth floor, Cara Whitman was furiously packing her designer leather handbag.

Her hands were shaking so violently she dropped her keycard twice. She had received a panicked text from Zach fifteen minutes ago: THE JANITOR IS ANDERSON’S DAUGHTER. THEY KNOW ABOUT APEX. RUN.

She reached for her coat, turned around, and froze.

Standing in her doorway were two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Unit of the City Police Department, flanked by Marcus Vance and two senior corporate attorneys.

"Cara Whitman?" the lead police detective asked, pulling a folded paper from his coat pocket.

Cara backed up against her mahogany desk, her face pale. "This... this is an internal administrative matter. Human Resources handles all internal—"

"You have the right to remain silent," the detective interrupted, stepping forward and snapping steel handcuffs over her wrists with a sharp, heavy click. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You are under arrest for grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and corporate extortion."

"You can't do this!" Cara shrieked as she was dragged toward the glass doors of the HR department. "I have a contract! I want my lawyer! Call Daniel Anderson!"

"Mr. Anderson signed the criminal complaint ten minutes ago," Marcus Vance said coldly as he opened the elevator doors for the officers. "And he personally requested that you be escorted out through the main lobby during lunch hour."

The scene in the main ground-floor lobby at 1:00 PM became stuff of legend among the company’s three thousand employees.

Hundreds of staff members, office clerks, analysts, and maintenance workers stood along the marble mezzanine floor as Zach Keller and Cara Whitman were led out in handcuffs by city police officers.

Zach kept his head ducked low, his face buried in his chest, trying to avoid the dozens of smartphone cameras taking video from every angle.

As they reached the heavy glass revolving doors leading out to the street, Daniel Anderson and Riley stepped out of the central elevator bank.

Riley was no longer wearing her gray custodial apron. She had changed into a clean, simple black linen suit, though a neat white bandage was still visible above her collar.

Zach caught her eye for a brief, fleeting second as the officer pushed him toward the police cruiser waiting at the curb.

"Riley..." Zach whispered, his voice cracking with desperation. "Please..."

Riley didn't say a word. She simply watched as the doors of the police cruiser slammed shut, cutting off his voice forever.
