Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

At 10:00 AM the following morning, two black sedans pulled up the long, winding driveway of the Granados estate.
Four armed state marshals stepped out, accompanied by a court-appointed official and a smug-looking Dr. Patricia Montes. Sofia and Julian stood on the front portico, waiting for them with satisfied expressions.
Inside the grand foyer, Leonardo met them, his eyes dark with immediate fury.
“What is the meaning of this, Julian?” Leonardo demanded, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.
The court official stepped forward, expanding a legal document. “Mr. Leonardo Granados, I am serving you with an emergency ex parte court order issued by the Third Circuit Family Court. Based on sworn affidavits submitted by Dr. Patricia Montes and your legal counsel, temporary medical guardianship of Diana, Abigail, and Adriana Granados has been transferred to your sister, Sofia Granados.”
Leonardo stepped forward like a wounded bear, but two marshals immediately placed their hands on their holstered sidearms.
“You have no authority in my house!” Leonardo roared.
“We have absolute authority, brother,” Sofia said calmly, stepping forward in her designer heels. “You have allowed an uneducated, unlicensed stranger to perform dangerous, unverified procedures on terminal children. You are mentally unfit to make medical decisions right now. The court agrees.”
“She saved Abigail’s life two nights ago!” Leonardo shouted, his chest heaving.
“She administered an unregulated toxic herbal concoction that caused a sudden blood pressure fluctuation!” Dr. Montes declared loudly for the marshals' benefit. “It was a near-fatal incident that Mr. Granados misconstrued as recovery. The children are being taken into state-supervised medical custody immediately.”
The marshals began moving past Leonardo toward the medical wing.
“Stop!” a clear, unshakeable voice echoed down the hall.
Brenda stepped out from the wing. She wasn't wearing her apron. She wore a clean, traditional embroidered dress, her posture straight as an arrow. In her hand, she held a thick, yellowed ledger with leather covers.
“You speak of law and authority,” Brenda said, her voice easily filling the cavernous foyer without shouting. “But you do not know the history of the ground you stand on.”
Julian laughed mockingly. “Get this peasant out of here, officers. She is interfering with a judicial order.”
“Wait,” the court official said, looking at the ledger in Brenda’s hands with sudden recognition. “What is that document?”
Brenda walked forward, showing no fear of the armed men. She opened the ledger to an ancient, official state seal stamped in faded red ink.
“This is the original land trust deed for the Valle de Bravo region, signed by the Federal Government in 1924,” Brenda announced clearly. “This estate was built on communal Indigenous trust land granted to the Zapotec and Mazahua council. My grandfather was the chief registrar of this trust.”
She pointed a long, steady finger at Julian Vance.
“Under Article 27 of the Mexican Constitution regarding Indigenous territorial rights, no state family court holds jurisdiction over medical or guardianship decisions made on registered trust land without the explicit consent of the local community health council—a council of which I am the appointed representative.”
Julian’s smug expression vanished. He snatched the paper from her hands, scanning the legal text frantically, his face turning pale.
“This... this is an ancient law! It’s obsolete!” Julian stammered.
“It was revalidated by the Supreme Court three years ago, counselor,” Brenda replied coolly. “If you step into that nursery without my consent, you are committing a federal territorial offense. The marshals know this.”
The two marshals looked at each other, stepping back slightly from the hallway.
“Is this true, Vance?” the court official snapped, looking at Julian with sudden anger. “Did you bring us out here on a jurisdictionally invalid order?”

Leonardo looked at Brenda with absolute wonder. The woman he thought was a simple mountain healer had just dismantled a billionaire’s legal trap with a single ancient book.
“Get off my land,” Leonardo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low gravel as he glared at his sister and Julian. “Before I use my own authority to throw you into the street.”
