Chapter 8 - The Ritual of the Three Rivers

High above the village, where three mountain streams converged into a crystal-clear pool of mineral-rich water, the final healing ritual took place.

It was dawn. The sun was just peeking over the mist-draped peaks, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold, rose, and violet.

Brenda, dressed in a traditional white woven gown decorated with intricate red floral embroidery, led Diana, Abigail, and Adriana into the cool, shallow waters of the pool. The girls wore simple linen slips, their small faces filled with wonder rather than fear.

Leonardo sat on the stone bank, holding a bundle of wild mountain herbs Brenda had taught him to weave the night before. He was no longer just an observer; he was an active participant in his children’s survival.

“Water takes what is heavy and carries it to the sea,” Brenda chanted softly, dipping a clay vessel into the swirling river water and gently pouring it over Diana’s shoulders. “The mountain leaves only what is strong.”

She moved to Abigail, then to Adriana, washing away the lingering smell of antiseptic, fear, and sickness that had clung to their skin for months. She rubbed smooth, mineral-rich river clay onto their joints, letting the rich earth draw out the deep inflammation caused by months of harsh chemical treatments.

The girls didn't cry from the cold. They laughed, splashing the water at each other and at Brenda, their cheeks flushed with dark, healthy blood, their voices echoing through the canyon like silver bells.

From the bank, Leonardo watched as Brenda lifted Adriana into her arms, twirling her around in the sunlit water. The sunlight caught the water droplets falling from Brenda’s dark hair, transforming her into something radiant, powerful, and almost divine.

He realized then that Brenda had not just saved his daughters from leukemia. She had saved him from the cold, icy shell he had built around his heart to protect himself from grief.

She had brought life back into a house of death.

That evening, around a roaring bonfire in the village square, the local elders gathered to play traditional music on wooden flutes and clay drums. The village women brought out vast platters of handmade mole, fresh avocados, and warm corn tamales.

Diana, Abigail, and Adriana fell asleep wrapped in woven wool blankets on a wooden bench, their breathing deep, peaceful, and entirely free of mechanical support.

Leonardo walked over to Brenda, who was sitting on a stone wall looking out over the glowing valley below. He handed her a wooden cup of hot spiced cacao.

“The independent medical team called from Mexico City an hour ago,” Leonardo said quietly, sitting beside her on the stone wall.

Brenda turned to him, her expression serene. “And?”

“Their bone marrow biopsies came back completely clear, Brenda,” Leonardo said, his voice trembling with an overwhelming mix of emotion. “Zero blast cells. Full remission across all three girls. The doctors are calling it a biological miracle that defies medical literature.”

Brenda smiled, sipping her hot cacao. “Doctors always call it a miracle when they don't know the name of the plant.”

Leonardo looked into her eyes, his heart beating with a steady, unshakeable certainty. “How can I ever repay you, Brenda? My empire, my money... none of it feels like enough.”

Brenda looked out at the stars glittering over the mountains. “You don't repay life with money, Leonardo. You repay life by living it.”
