Chapter 7 - The Foundation of Tomorrow

A month later, the cold Chicago winter gave way to the crisp, bright promise of spring. The trees along Lake Michigan began to bud with fresh green leaves, and the city hummed with renewed energy.

At Brooks and Hale Architecture—now officially rebranded as Brooks, Carter & Associates—the atmosphere on the design floor was unrecognizable from the tense, cutthroat environment of the past.

The office was bright, filled with natural light, indoor plants, and the sound of collaborative teamwork. Junior designers no longer looked over their shoulders in fear; instead, they gathered around central tables, sketching, debating, and laughing openly.

Ethan’s private corner office had its door propped wide open—a symbolic gesture that he was no longer an isolated, brooding boss, but an accessible leader.

Inside the office, Ethan stood beside a large drafting table reviewing blueprints for a new community library project.

The door gently swung open, and Olivia walked in. She carried a tray holding two cups of artisanal coffee and a small plate of chocolate chip cookies baked by Sophie.

"Delivery for the chief architect," Olivia announced, setting the tray down on the corner of the desk.

Ethan looked up, a bright, welcoming smile transforming his face. He walked over, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her gently against him. "If the chief architect gets any more spoiled, he’s going to lose his edge."

"Good," Olivia laughed, resting her hands against his chest. "You've spent enough years being the cold, unapproachable genius. It's time to be a normal human being who eats cookies before noon."

"I can get behind that timeline," Ethan murmured, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to her lips.

When they broke apart, Olivia gestured toward a stack of colorful architectural models sitting on the side table. They weren't skyscrapers or corporate offices. They were miniature prototypes for the Barnaby Community Centers—a new initiative funded jointly by Ethan’s firm and Olivia’s foundation, designed to build creative, safe after-school art and learning spaces for underprivileged children across the Midwest.

"The zoning board approved the South Side location this morning," Olivia said, her amber eyes shining with excitement. "Groundbreaking is scheduled for next month."

"That’s incredible, Olivia," Ethan said, his voice thick with admiration. "You’ve built an entire empire of creativity out of the ashes of what they tried to destroy."

"We built it," Olivia corrected gently, reaching up to touch the lapel of his suit jacket. "Remember? Good architecture requires a strong foundation."

Ethan nodded, his expression turning soft and serious. "Speaking of foundations..."

He reached into his breast pocket, pulling out a small, dark velvet box.

Olivia’s breath caught in her throat. She stepped back slightly, her hands flying to her mouth as Ethan dropped slowly down onto one knee—right there on the polished hardwood floor of his corporate office, with the Chicago skyline shining brightly through the window behind him.

"Ethan..." she whispered, tears instantly welling up in her eyes.

"When I met you," Ethan began, his voice steady, rich, and filled with an absolute, unwavering devotion, "my life was structured around walls, defense mechanisms, and old ghosts. You walked into my world with a navy dress, a terrified heart, and a quiet strength that completely dismantled every barrier I had built."

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a breathtaking, custom-designed ring—featuring a delicate, intricate platinum band shaped like winding architectural vines, holding a brilliant, conflict-free diamond that caught the sunlight like a star.

"You taught me how to live again, Olivia," Ethan continued, his dark eyes locked onto hers with fierce, unconditional love. "And you gave me a family with Sophie that I never knew I was missing. Will you marry me? Will you help me build the rest of our lives together?"

Olivia didn't hesitate for a single second.

May you like

"Yes," she choked out, a sob of pure joy escaping her lips as she nodded rapidly. "Yes, Ethan. A thousand times yes."

Ethan slid the delicate platinum ring onto her finger, standing up to pull her into his arms. He spun her around gently as Olivia laughed through her tears, burying her face in his shoulder. The office door remained wide open, and across the drafting floor, several junior architects caught sight of the scene, breaking into sudden, spontaneous applause that echoed warmly through the entire firm.
