Chapter 8 - The Dragon’s Flight

The wedding of Ethan Brooks and Olivia Carter took place in late September, beneath the magnificent, newly completed stained-glass dome of the Chicago Cultural Center—the very masterpiece they had fought so hard to create.
The grand hall was transformed into an enchanted indoor garden, filled with cascading white roses, ivy, and soft golden fairy lights.
Over three hundred guests filled the room: city officials, prominent architects, philanthropic leaders, and close friends. In the front row sat Amanda Pierce, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief, while Sophie—serving as the official flower girl—sprinkled pink rose petals down the central aisle with fierce, absolute concentration.
As the string quartet played a soft, sweeping melody, Olivia walked down the aisle on the arm of her proud older brother.
She wore a breathtaking, custom-made ivory lace gown designed in collaboration with Ethan’s firm, featuring subtle, elegant floral embroidery along the train. Her dark hair was styled in soft curls, and around her neck hung the same silver necklace she had worn on their first disastrously beautiful date at Lumina.
Standing at the altar, waiting for her beneath the soaring architectural arches, Ethan looked like a man who had finally found his true home. He wore a tailored black tuxedo, his dark eyes shining with emotion as he watched her approach.
When Olivia reached the altar, her brother handed her hand gently into Ethan’s.
The minister smiled warmly, beginning the ceremony. But it was the vows they had written themselves that brought a breathless silence to the grand hall.
"Olivia," Ethan spoke first, his voice deep and resonant, echoing against the marble columns. "Before I met you, I believed architecture was about creating structures that could withstand the weight of the world. You taught me that true architecture is about creating space for love, for vulnerability, and for truth. I promise to stand beside you, to protect our family, and to love you through every blueprint we write together for the rest of our days."
Tears slipped down Olivia’s cheeks as she smiled up at him, her voice clear and steady when it was her turn.
"Ethan, I used to think my life was a rough draft—something I had to constantly erase and redraw to keep from failing," Olivia said, her eyes locked on his. "You gave me the courage to ink my lines in permanent pen. You loved me without condition, and you gave my daughter a world where she knows she can conquer anything. I promise to be your partner, your loudest cheerleader, and your safe harbor, always."
"With the power vested in me," the minister announced, beaming, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Ethan, you may kiss your bride."
Ethan pulled Olivia into his arms, dipping her slightly as their lips met.
The grand hall erupted into thunderous cheers, applause, and a shower of confetti from the balcony above. Sophie jumped up and down from her seat in the front row, waving a small paper flag she had drawn herself—featuring Barnaby the Architect wearing a tiny wedding top hat.
As the reception kicked off with music, laughter, and clinking champagne glasses, Ethan pulled Olivia close onto the dance floor beneath the glittering dome.
"Mrs. Brooks," Ethan murmured, resting his chin against her hair. "How does it feel?"

Olivia leaned back, looking up into the eyes of the man who had changed her universe, a radiant, triumphant smile illuminating her face.
"It feels like a masterpiece," she whispered.
