Chapter 5 - The Terms of Surrender

The warehouse district along the Chicago River was quiet at 4:00 AM. Inside a private holding room owned by the Vale organization, Preston Hale sat on a cold metal chair, stripped of his expensive jacket and watch. He was no longer the arrogant investor from Table Twelve; he was a terrified boy who had finally realized that his father’s money couldn't save him.

The heavy iron door opened, and Elena walked in alone.

She didn't bring guards. She didn't need them. Dominic was standing just outside the two-way glass, his eyes fixed on the room.

Elena sat down across from Preston. She placed a pair of simple scissors and a small handheld mirror on the table between them.

"You like changing people's appearance, Preston?" Elena asked, her voice calm and detached. "You think it’s funny to take away someone’s dignity because you think they can’t fight back?"

Preston wept openly, his shoulders shaking. "I'm sorry. Please tell your husband not to kill me. I'll do anything. I'll give you all my money. I have a million dollars in my private account—"

"I don't want your money," Elena interrupted. She pushed the scissors toward him. "Pick them up."

Preston hesitated, his hands trembling as he reached for the metal handles. "What... what do you want me to do?"

"Your friends recorded what you did to me because they thought it was a joke," Elena said, leaning forward. "You are going to use those scissors to cut off every bit of your own hair. Right now. While the security cameras in this room record it. And then, you are going to upload that video to every social media platform your friends use, with a full, signed apology to every service worker in this city."

Preston stared at her, stunned. "That's... that'll ruin my reputation. I'll be a laughingstock."

Elena smiled, a small, sharp expression that carried all the ruthlessness of the family she had married into. "Your reputation, Preston, is already gone. Your father’s company is currently losing ten million dollars an hour because the supply lines are blocked. If you don't pick up those scissors in the next ten seconds, I will walk out of this room, and I will let my husband handle the rest of the conversation."

Preston didn't wait. He grabbed the scissors and began to hack wildly at his own hair, sobbing as the blonde strands fell onto the concrete floor.

Elena watched him for a long moment, then stood up and walked out without looking back.
