Chapter 8 - The Desperate Move

Realizing he was completely cornered, Richard Hale made one final, desperate move.

On Wednesday night, he bypassed the local authorities entirely and met with a rogue faction of the rival Detroit syndicate that had been trying to gain a foothold in Chicago for years. The meeting took place in an abandoned rail yard on the city’s edge.

"I’ll give you thirty percent of my development projects," Richard told the leader of the Detroit crew, a ruthless man named Vance. "Just eliminate Dominic Vale. If he’s gone, the unions will break, and I can regain control of the city."

Vance smiled, his eyes gleaming in the dark. "Dominic Vale is a heavy target, Hale. It costs a lot to make a man like that disappear."

"I don't care about the cost!" Richard shouted, his civility completely gone. "He’s destroying my family! My son is a pariah, my company is bankrupt, and his wife is sitting in my boardroom! Cut the head off the snake!"

What Richard didn't know was that the Vale organization had eyes everywhere. The moment Vance agreed to the hit, Victor intercepted the communication.

"They're moving tonight, boss," Victor said, rushing into the Lake Forest estate where Dominic and Elena were finishing dinner. "Vance has hit teams entering the city borders now. They’re tracking your vehicle."

Dominic slowly put down his napkin. He didn't look worried; he looked almost relieved that the conflict was finally moving to a arena he knew best.

"El," Dominic said, turning to his wife. "You stay here. The house is locked down. I’ll take care of Vance."

Elena stood up, her hand catching his sleeve. "Don't just stop them, Dom. End it. Make sure no one ever thinks they can touch this family again."

Dominic kissed her forehead, his lips lingering against her skin. "I promise."
