Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Crown

One year after the trial.
The headquarters of Whitaker Global occupied the top five floors of Chicago’s newest glass tower—a building that had once belonged to Ardell Holdings before its liquidation.
I stood in my corner office, looking out over the city skyline as the golden autumn sun reflected off the lake.
The door to my office opened softly.
Dr. Marcus Vance walked in, wearing a sharp grey suit, carrying a bouquet of fresh yellow roses—my favorite flowers.
“You look like a woman who just took over the Midwest shipping industry,” Marcus smiled, setting the flowers on my desk.
“I look like a woman who finally owns her life,” I corrected him warmly, stepping up to hug him.
Over the last year, Marcus had been my rock. He hadn't just treated my physical recovery; he had stood by my side during every legal battle, every corporate restructuring, and every personal milestone. His quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and deep compassion had shown me what a real partner looked like.
“How is the construction on the St. Aurelia site going?” Marcus asked, wrapping his arm gently around my waist.
“The Eleanor Whitaker Rehabilitation Center opens next month,” I said proudly. “We’ve already accepted our first two hundred patients—all receiving free, cutting-edge neuro-restorative therapy.”
Marcus looked down into my eyes, his face softening with deep, genuine love. “You turned a night of absolute cruelty into a sanctuary of hope for thousands of people, Eleanor.”
“I couldn't have done it without you, Marcus,” I whispered, resting my head against his chest.

He pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket.
My heart skipped a beat.
