Chapter 10 - The First-Class Heart

A soft chime sounded from Evelyn’s phone sitting on the wooden porch table.
She picked it up and opened a photo message sent directly from Clara.
It was a picture taken at Gate A12 in Dallas earlier that afternoon.
In the photograph, a young woman wearing a flight student uniform—a former waitress from a small town in Texas who had received one of the foundation’s scholarships—was holding up her commercial pilot license with a massive, triumphant smile.
Beside the photo was a short text message from Clara: “She just passed her final check-ride. Her first official commercial flight with Atlantic Crest is tomorrow morning.”
Evelyn smiled, a tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes.
She stood up from her rocking chair, walked over to the edge of the porch, and looked up at the vast, endless twilight sky. A silver commercial jet was soaring high above the clouds, its white contrail catching the last golden rays of the setting sun.
Julian walked up behind her, gently wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin against her shoulder.
“What are you thinking about?” Julian asked softly.
Evelyn rested her hand over his, looking up at the silver plane trailing across the sky.
“I’m thinking about that morning on the shuttle,” Evelyn whispered, a quiet, beautiful smile touching her lips.
“Do you ever regret walking off that plane?” Julian asked.
Evelyn turned in his arms, looking into his warm, loving eyes, feeling the complete peace that filled her heart, her home, and her life.

“Never,” Evelyn answered softly, kissing his lips gently under the starlit sky. “Because sometimes, you have to let them tear up your ticket... so you can show them who really owns the sky.”
