Chapter 1 - The Shattered Cake

The lawn of the Vane Estate descended into a dead, suffocating silence.
Rich cream and silver icing smeared across the front of Robert’s tailored suit as he sprawled in the wreckage of the six-tier anniversary cake. The crowd of wealthy relatives, high-society guests, and corporate investors recoiled, their champagne glasses frozen halfway to their lips. Smart-phones held by mocking cousins lowered slowly, the recording screens suddenly reflecting absolute terror instead of smug amusement.
"Did you really just lay hands on me in my own home?!" Robert gasped, spitting a mouthful of sugar and sponge onto the manicured grass. He scrambled backward, his hands sticky, his face burning a dark, dangerous crimson. "Security! Get this ungrateful bastard out of here! Arrest him!"
Helen rushed down the stone steps of the mansion, her silk dress rustling aggressively. Her face was contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. "Thomas! How dare you strike your father! You were brought back to this family out of pure charity after your pathetic little business collapsed! You and those worthless, half-breed children should be on your knees begging for forgiveness!"
Thomas didn't flinch. He didn't raise his fist again. He simply stepped in front of Rebecca, Samuel, and Jacob, shielding them with his broad frame. His dark eyes were cold—colder than the steel of the sub-zero vaults he managed.
"Touch them again, Helen," Thomas said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that cut through the garden breeze, "and a ruined cake will be the absolute least of your concerns."
"You have nothing!" Robert screamed, pushing himself up to his feet with the help of two nervous cousins. "You live in the guest house! You work off your debt in my warehouse! I own your mortgage! I own your name! You are nothing without the Vane legacy!"
"Your legacy?" Thomas let out a single, harsh laugh that sounded like snapping wood. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a leather-bound folder tied with a gold ribbon. "You think this fifty-million-dollar anniversary gala was funded by Vane Enterprises' collapsing logistics department?"
Robert froze, his eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"
"The catering bill. The security contracts. The venue reservation. The five-million-dollar line of credit your bank miraculously approved three weeks ago when you were seventy-two hours away from insolvency," Thomas said smoothly, opening the folder and pulling out a crisp white document bearing a metallic obsidian seal. "It wasn't granted by the bank, Robert. It was underwritten by Apex Global Holdings."
A low murmur rippled through the gathered executives. Apex Global Holdings was the shadowy private equity giant that had quietly bought up forty percent of the state's commercial real estate over the last three years.
"And who do you think owns ninety percent of Apex, Father?" Thomas asked, stepping closer until his shadow completely engulfed the sticky, cream-covered man.

Thomas tossed the document onto Robert’s chest.
"Read the signature line. The man you just forced to clean your plates owns every brick under your feet."
