Chapter 9 - The Day of Reckoning
The Boulder County Family Courthouse was swarming with reporters when our black town car pulled up to the secure rear entrance. I walked into Courtroom 402 wearing a sharp, tailored navy wool suit, my hair swept back in a professional chignon. I looked every bit the powerful, composed CEO I was. Molly carried Ivy in a covered car seat, accompanied by Jennifer and a team of forensic legal experts.
Brent sat at the defense table, looking smug, surrounded by his mother and sister in the front spectator row. He gave me a condescending nod as I took my place across the aisle. He truly believed his media campaign had tipped the scales in his favor.
Judge Evelyn Vance adjusted her half-moon glasses, looking down from the bench with an expression of icy gravity. "We are here today regarding the emergency petition for temporary custody filed by the respondent, Brent Morelli. Mr. Morelli, your counsel claims that the child is in immediate danger due to the mother’s unstable behavior. Present your evidence."
Brent’s lawyer stood up, confidently laying out his case, playing the video clip of Diane’s television interview and presenting the quick-sale deed of the Redwood Crest property as proof of "erratic financial mania."
When he finished, Judge Vance turned her gaze toward my table. "Ms. Vance, what do you have to say for yourself?"
Jennifer stood up calmly, opening a leather binder. "Your Honor, we would like to submit Exhibit A through D into the record. Exhibit A is the complete biometric data log from the Redwood Crest Drive smart system, timestamped exactly three days postpartum. It shows the respondent, Brent Morelli, explicitly altering the master administration codes while the petitioner was at a pediatric checkup, followed by his immediate departure to a luxury resort in Miami."
A murmur went through the courtroom. Brent’s lawyer shifted uncomfortably.
"Exhibit B," Jennifer continued, her voice crisp and devastating, "is a comprehensive medical report from the chief of obstetrics at Boulder Memorial. It confirms that the petitioner is in perfect physical and mental health, demonstrating exceptional maternal care. Exhibit C is the certified title to the new primary residence in Colorado Springs—a twenty-thousand-square-foot, state-of-the-art secure estate, entirely unencumbered by debt, proving the child has never been closer to luxury and stability."

Judge Vance’s eyes darkened as she glared down at Brent. "Mr. Morelli, did you lock a three-day postpartum woman out of her own home to go on a vacation?"
"I... I thought it was our house!" Brent stammered, the sweat suddenly beads on his forehead. "She was being controlling, Your Honor! I wanted to establish my boundaries!"
