Chapter 6 - The Freezing Void

Back in Cabo, the third day of the vacation was unfolding with the same lazy, sun-drenched rhythm as the first.

Daniel was lounging by the pool, scrolling through his phone, when a sudden notification banner popped up from his banking app.

Alert: External Wire Transfer Received.

He blinked, sitting up slightly. He hadn’t initiated any wire transfers lately. Curious, he tapped the notification and logged into his corporate account dashboard.

The screen loaded, and Daniel’s eyes scanned the primary balance sheet.

His breath caught in his throat.

The balance wasn't just changed. It was multiplied.

A lump sum of $1,800,000.00 had just been deposited into the primary operating account of Vanguard Holdings LLC.

Daniel stared at the screen, his brain refusing to process the numbers. One point eight million dollars? Where had a cash wire of that magnitude come from? Did one of his commercial land options finally sell? Did a silent investor buy into his startup firm?

Then he noticed the reference memo attached to the wire transfer:

PURCHASE-SALE AGREEMENT: HILLCREST RESIDENCE - ESCROW ID #8849-VH.

Daniel’s blood ran instantly cold. Every drop of alcohol in his system evaporated, replaced by a sudden, violent surge of pure, unadulterated panic.

The Hillcrest residence.

His house. His family estate.

“Mom,” Daniel blurted out, sitting bolt upright so fast his margarita glass tipped over, spilling ice and lime across the concrete table.

Evelyn didn’t open her eyes immediately, annoyed by the interruption. “Daniel, lower your voice. You’re disturbing my meditation.”

“Mom, look at this,” Daniel said, his voice cracking as he shoved his phone right into her face. “Look at the screen! Vanguard Holdings just received a wire transfer for one point eight million dollars. For the house.”

Evelyn slowly pushed her sunglasses down her nose, squinting at the screen. “Well... that’s wonderful, darling! Your business must have finally closed that real estate play you were talking about last year. See? I told you everything would work out. Now you can buy me that new Mercedes convertible—”

“No, Mom, you don’t understand!” Daniel interrupted, his hands shaking so violently he nearly dropped the phone into the pool. “Vanguard Holdings isn’t my company. It’s Claire’s company.”

Evelyn froze. Her mouth parted slightly. “What do you mean, Claire’s company? That’s your house. We gave you the money for the down payment!”

“We gave me the money, but when we structured the purchase for tax and liability shelter, Claire registered the LLC in her name as sole managing member!” Daniel yelled, standing up so abruptly that several nearby tourists turned to look. “She didn't tell me! I never looked at the damn corporate binders because I trusted her!”

“Well, call her!” Evelyn shrieked, her relaxed vacation demeanor shattering instantly. “Call her right now and tell her to cancel whatever game she’s playing!”

Daniel snatched his phone back, frantically dialing Claire’s cell number.

It rang once. Twice.

Then a crisp, automated voice cut through: “The subscriber you have dialed is no longer in service or has blocked incoming calls from this number.”

Daniel tried his office line. He tried Vivian’s office. He tried every number he could think of.

May you like

Nothing. Absolute, dead silence.

“She sold it,” Daniel whispered, his face turning the color of ash as he stared down at the million-dollar wire confirmation on his screen. “While we were sitting by the pool drinking margaritas... she sold our house.”
