Chapter 9 - The Final Cipher

A sudden silence fell over the multi-billion-dollar audience. Several high-profile buyers sat up in their chairs, leaning forward to watch the confrontation.
"This girl is insane!" Samuel yelled, his voice cracking slightly. "She knows nothing about the Russo archives!"
"Page fourteen of your fake book," I said calmly, pointing at the display case on stage, "uses a standard Latin substitution code. You thought it represented an asset list. But my father deliberately planted that exact cipher in his 2018 published textbook as a trap for intellectual property thieves."
I looked out at the room of executives.
"If anyone in this room has a mobile terminal, search the Library of Congress database for Julian Vance, Paper 402. You will find the exact phrase Samuel claims is a 'secret key' printed on page eighty-eight of an open-access academic paper."
Within five seconds, three prominent bankers in the front row pulled out their encrypted tablets.
"She’s right," one of the bankers called out, his voice sharp with anger. "The substitution code on page fourteen is word-for-word from a public paper published six years ago! This entire ledger is a derivative forgery!"
Samuel turned white. He backed away from the pedestal, looking wildly around the room for Viktor Hale. But Viktor was already slipping out through a side service exit, surrounded by federal agents who had quietly secured the perimeter ten minutes prior.
"Even if the book is a copy!" Samuel shrieked, grabbing the velvet display case. "You don't have the routing activation! The financial clearing network goes dark at midnight without the phonetic key! You lose everything anyway, Dominic!"
Dominic stepped onto the stage, taking his place beside me. He didn't touch Samuel. He simply looked at him with absolute disdain.
"Maya," Dominic said softly, his voice carrying through the quiet room. "Finish it."
I turned to face the main digital terminal connected to the global clearing exchange. I walked up to the touch screen, which was requesting the three-part primary phonetic key to verify the legitimate ownership of the port network.
I closed my eyes for a second, seeing my father’s smile as he sat beside my bed in our tiny Crown Heights apartment, reciting the soft, strange rhythmic words he made me memorize when I was a little girl.
I opened my eyes and typed the characters into the terminal, reciting the translation aloud into the microphone:
"'Veritas non in auro sed in silentio manet.'"
"'Truth rests not in gold, but in silence.'"
The digital screen flashed green. A low chime sounded through the ballroom sound system, followed by a bright gold notification across every terminal in the room:

Samuel Vance dropped his hands to his sides, his knees giving out as federal marshals stepped onto the stage and placed him in handcuffs.
