Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Ledger

The auditorium degenerated into total pandemonium as news cameras streamed the confrontation live across the state.
Julian Thorne stepped in front of Elias, attempting to recover his composure. "Ms. Vance, this is a private corporate assembly. Whatever ridiculous publicity stunt you are attempting—"
"This isn't a stunt, Mr. Thorne," Victoria Vance interrupted, opening her briefcase and laying three thick stacks of legal documents onto the press podium. "This is a criminal referral."
Victoria turned to face the wall of news cameras.
"For the past seventy-two hours," Victoria declared into the microphones, "the public has been told that Ms. Claire Vale embezzled twelve million dollars from the Vale Charitable Endowment. We are here today to present the certified forensic bank records from Chase Manhattan and Deutsche Bank."
Victoria pulled out a luminous chart, holding it up for the reporters.
"The twelve million dollars was indeed transferred," Victoria continued smoothly. "However, it was not transferred to Claire Vale. It was transferred through four shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands—all four of which are directly owned by Mr. Elias Vale and co-signed by Dr. Julian Thorne."
Gasps echoed through the room. Elias stumbled backward, knocking over his glass of champagne, which shattered loudly on the wooden stage.
"That's a lie!" Elias screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Claire. "She forged those documents! She's a thief!"
"We didn't just trace the money, Elias," Claire said, her voice echoing clearly through the auditorium speakers. "We traced the IP addresses. The wire transfers were executed from your personal laptop inside your Midtown apartment on Tuesday night at 11:14 PM. At that exact time, you were streaming a live poker game on your tablet. The camera footage from your own home security system—which we subpoenaed yesterday—shows you sitting at your desk, signing the authorization forms."
Julian Thorne’s jaw clenched tightly. He spun around, glaring at Elias with lethal fury. "You idiot... you executed the transfers from your home network?!"
"I... I thought the VPN was untraceable!" Elias stammered, panic choking his breath.
"Silence!" Julian hissed, turning back to the reporters with a cold, desperate smile. "Even if there are financial irregularities regarding Mr. Vale's personal conduct, it does not change the legal reality! Mrs. Mara Vale has been declared mentally incompetent under state law! Elias Vale holds her legal power of attorney!"
Mara stepped up to the second microphone.
She didn't look tired. She didn't look confused. The woman who had scrubbed thousands of blood-stained sheets in the cold basement of St. Orison stood before the press with the regal authority of a queen reclaiming her throne.
"Dr. Thorne," Mara said, her voice trembling not with fear, but with righteous indignation. "You had three doctors from your private payroll sign a document claiming I suffered from advanced dementia. You claimed it was an inherited condition passed down from my father, Arthur Bennett."

Mara looked directly into the main television camera.
"My father did not die of dementia," Mara announced, her voice ringing with absolute truth. "My father was murdered in this very hospital thirty-four years ago."
