Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

At that exact moment, the side doors of the auditorium swung open again.
This time, it was not lawyers or reporters.
Six federal agents in dark blue jackets bearing the gold insignia of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division marched down the carpeted steps.
Leading them was Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance—Victoria Vance’s son.
Marcus stepped onto the stage, pulling a red leather folder from his jacket.
"Dr. Julian Thorne," Marcus announced loudly, his voice echoing across the room. "And Mr. Elias Vale. I have in my possession a federal arrest warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District."
Elias’s knees gave out. He collapsed onto his hands and knees on the stage floor, sobbing hysterically. "No! Please! It was Julian! He told me to do it! He promised me fifty million dollars if I signed the conservatorship papers!"
"Elias, shut your mouth!" Julian screamed, backing away toward the rear exit of the stage.
Two federal agents immediately stepped into Julian’s path, blocking the exit.
"Julian Thorne," Marcus Vance read from the warrant, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, illegal asset seizure, and obstruction of justice. Furthermore, pursuant to the unsealing of cold-case evidence, you and the estate of Thorne Medical are named as primary co-conspirators in the 1998 homicide of Arthur Bennett."
Agent snapped heavy steel handcuffs around Julian Thorne’s wrists.
Julian didn't look at the agents. He didn't look at the cameras. He turned his head and glared at Claire with pure, venomous hatred.
"You..." Julian spat, his voice trembling with rage. "You were nothing! A beggar sleeping in the trash behind the laundry room! You destroyed a dynasty!"
Claire stepped up to Julian, her eyes calm, unbothered, and completely cold.
"You built your dynasty on top of a dead man's bones, Dr. Thorne," Claire said softly. "I just dug up the dirt."
As the agents dragged Julian Thorne off the stage, Marcus Vance turned to Elias, who was still kneeling on the floor, weeping into his silk tie.
"Elias Vale," Marcus said with deep disgust. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, embezzlement of charitable funds, and filing false sworn statements to a state court."
Elias crawled across the stage toward Mara, grabbing the hem of her trousers.
"Mom! Mom, please!" Elias sobbed, his face smeared with tears and sweat. "Tell them it was a mistake! Tell them you forgive me! I’m your son! Your biological blood! You can't let them take me to prison!"
Mara looked down at the boy she had carried in her arms, the boy she had worked thirty-six-hour shifts to feed, the boy who had chosen greed over love at every single turn of his life.
She slowly leaned down, unclenching his fingers from her trousers.

"You were my son, Elias," Mara said softly, her voice filled with a finality that broke the last lingering shadow of her past. "But blood doesn't make a family. Loyalty does."
The agents hoisted Elias to his feet and led him away in chains, his pathetic wails echoing down the long hallway until the doors swung shut.
