Chapter 8 - The Confrontation in the Dark

Floodlights erupted across the front lawn, illuminating the driveway in brilliant white light. Sirens began to wail across the estate grounds.

Marcus, Jonathan, and four armed estate security guards rushed out the front doors.

The intruder in the black hoodie panicked, dropping a heavy black box onto the gravel driveway as he tried to sprint toward the perimeter wall. But Jonathan moved with military speed, tackling the man to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back, and clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Marcus stepped forward, his dark coat billowing in the night wind. He looked down at the tackled intruder.

Jonathan pulled back the hood, revealing a thin, sharp-faced man in his early thirties—a junior analyst from Thompson Industries’ legal department named Kevin Vance.

"Kevin?" Marcus said, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "What are you doing on my private property?"

"Mr. Thompson! Please!" Kevin begged, his face pressed against the cold gravel. "I was just paid to do it! I didn't know what it was!"

Jonathan picked up the dropped black box from the driveway. He opened the casing carefully, examining the electronic components inside.

"It's a military-grade GPS tracker equipped with a remote-activated brake line bypass," Jonathan reported, looking up at Marcus with grave eyes. "If you took this car onto the highway tomorrow morning, Marcus... one press of a remote button from five miles away, and your brakes would completely fail at seventy miles per hour."

A cold, lethal silence settled over the driveway.

Marcus stared at the device, then looked down at Kevin.

"Just like eight years ago on Highway 9," Marcus whispered, the remaining pieces of his missing memory suddenly locking into place with terrifying clarity. "It wasn't an accident. Richard tried to kill me eight years ago."

"He promised me half a million dollars!" Kevin sobbed, shaking in terror. "He said if you made it to the board meeting tomorrow, he was going to prison! Please, don't kill me!"

Marcus leaned down, his eyes burning like hot coals. "I'm not going to kill you, Kevin. You're going to give a full, signed confession to the FBI tonight. And tomorrow morning... you are going to help me walk Richard Sterling into a trap he will never escape from."
