Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Trap

At 8:45 AM the following morning, the forty-fourth floor of the Thompson Industries glass tower was buzzing with executive tension.
Board members in expensive suits sat around the thirty-foot mahogany conference table. At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling, looking pristine, confident, and wearing a triumphant smile.
On the table in front of Richard lay a proposal for an emergency vote to strip Marcus Thompson of his executive powers due to "mental instability and sudden unannounced absences."
"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard announced, tapping his gold pen against a crystal water glass. "As you know, Marcus missed our primary investor meeting yesterday. Reports have surfaced that he was seen in a low-income neighborhood displaying erratic behavior. For the stability of Thompson Industries, I move that we immediately freeze his voting shares."
"Seconded," one of Richard’s paid board members spoke up.
Before the vote could be taken, the double oak doors of the boardroom swung open with heavy, thunderous force.
Marcus Thompson walked into the room.
He didn't look insane. He looked towering, untouchable, and flanked by six uniformed federal agents and two district prosecutors. Beside him walked Sarah, looking breathtaking in a tailored navy dress, and eight-year-old Tyler, holding his father's hand firmly.
The entire boardroom gasped. Richard Sterling’s gold pen slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the glass table. The color drained from his face until he looked like a corpse.
"M-Marcus..." Richard stammered, standing up slowly, his hands trembling. "What is the meaning of this? Why are federal agents here?"
"I brought some new investors to the meeting, Richard," Marcus said smoothly, taking his seat at the far end of the table, placing Tyler on the chair beside him. "And I brought a special gift for you."
Marcus nodded to the lead FBI agent, who placed a heavy tablet on the center of the conference table and hit play.
The room watched in stunned horror as Kevin Vance’s recorded confession played over the speakers, followed by financial bank records detailing eight years of stolen Cayman Island accounts, the sabotage order from eight years ago, and the wiretapped call from last night ordering the brake line bypass on Marcus’s sedan.
Richard backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, his breathing ragged. "It's... it's a lie! He's trying to frame me! I built this company while he was in a coma!"
"You didn't build it, Richard," Marcus said, standing up, his voice echoing across the room like a divine judgment. "You stole it. You tried to murder me eight years ago, you hid my wife and son in poverty, and you tried to finish the job last night."
The lead FBI agent stepped forward, pulling out a pair of heavy iron handcuffs.
"Richard Sterling," the agent announced loudly. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, grand larceny, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the federal agents wrestled Richard Sterling to the floor, clicking the steel cuffs around his wrists, Richard looked up at Marcus, his face twisted in desperate rage.
"You had nothing!" Richard screamed as he was dragged toward the exit. "You were supposed to die on Highway 9!"

Tyler looked up from his seat, his voice clear and ringing through the silent boardroom.
"My daddy didn't die," Tyler said proudly, holding Marcus’s hand. "And he's never going away again."
