Chapter 6 - The Unbreakable Bond

By the time the ambulance brought Sarah back to my estate later that morning, the rain had completely cleared, replaced by a brilliant, crisp blue sunrise.

The estate felt different. The dark, suffocating shadow that had hung over the house during my marriage to Clara was gone, replaced by an energy of quiet, healing life.

I led Sarah up the grand staircase to the third-floor suite.

When I opened the door, Mrs. Harlow was sitting in a rocker, holding the baby, while Mia sat on the rug, coloring in a sketchbook that my staff had brought up for her.

"Sarah," I said softly, stepping aside.

Sarah walked slowly into the room, her eyes locked on the tiny bundle in Mrs. Harlow’s arms.

Mrs. Harlow smiled warmly, standing up and stepping toward the young mother. "He’s been waiting for you, dear."

Sarah reached out with shaking arms, taking her baby into her chest for the first time. The moment the infant touched her skin, he let out a tiny, soft coo, settling against her warmth as if he recognized her heart rhythm instantly.

Sarah sank into the rocking chair, tears falling onto the baby’s soft blue blanket as she kissed his tiny forehead over and over again. "My sweet boy... my sweet, beautiful boy..."

Mia walked over quietly, leaning against the arm of the chair, looking up at Sarah. "I told him you were coming," the little girl whispered softly. "I told him his mommy was strong."

Sarah looked up at Mia, wiping her eyes, and reached out her arm to pull the little girl into a gentle hug. "What's your name, sweetheart?"

"Mia," she replied, smiling softly.

"You saved my baby, Mia," Sarah said, her voice filled with profound gratitude. "You were his guardian angel."

I stood by the doorway, watching the three of them—Sarah, the baby, and Mia—bathed in the morning sunlight streaming through the arched windows.

For twelve years, I had believed I was destined to be alone, a man without an heir, living in a cold castle built on lies. But looking at them now, I realized that my true life was just beginning.

Richard Sterling stepped up beside me in the hallway, holding a stack of legal documents. "The courts have granted temporary emergency custody of the child to you and Sarah, Julian. Vance and Clara’s bail hearings were denied. They’re facing federal racketeering and kidnapping charges. They’ll be going away for a very long time."

"And Mia?" I asked, looking at the little girl sitting with Sarah. "Her grandmother, Rose, was in the hospital."

"We checked," Richard reported gently. "Rose passed away two days ago at the public clinic. Mia has no remaining living relatives. She’s an orphan, Julian."

I looked back into the room. Mia was laughing softly as the baby held onto her tiny pinky finger with his little hand.

"She’s not an orphan anymore, Richard," I said quietly. "Call the adoption lawyers. Mia stays right here."
