Chapter 7 - The Trial of Shadow and Light

Six months passed.

The trial of Vance and Clara Carter became one of the most publicized corporate scandals in the nation’s history. For three intense weeks, the federal courtroom in Chicago was packed with reporters, investigators, and citizens captivated by the exposure of the twelve-year conspiracy.

I took the witness stand on the twelfth day of the trial.

Sitting across from me were Vance and Clara, dressed in orange prison jumpsuits, stripped of their vanity, designer clothes, and stolen power. Clara refused to meet my eyes, while Vance glared at me with a bitter, ruined malice.

I laid out every detail—the stolen samples, the fake infertility diagnosis, the offshore accounts, the threat in my parlor, and the night my son was brought to my porch in a trash bag.

When Sarah took the stand, her voice clear, confident, and steady, describing how Vance’s enforcers had held her isolated in Saint Mary’s, the jury wept.

The verdict was returned in less than two hours.

Guilty on all counts.

Vance Carter was sentenced to thirty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Clara Carter received twenty-two years for conspiracy, fraud, and kidnapping.

As the officers led them out of the courtroom in heavy chains, Clara turned to look at me one last time, her eyes filled with tears, mouthing the words, "I'm sorry, Julian."

I didn't feel anger anymore. I felt only a profound, liberating peace. I turned my back on them and walked out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight, where Richard, Sarah, Mia, and my legal team were waiting.

The ghosts of my past were finally buried.
