Chapter 8 - The Birth of Hope

The delivery room at the Hospital Materno Infantil was filled with the rhythmic beat of medical monitors and the encouraging shouts of the medical staff.

"Push, Mariana! One more time! You're doing great!" the doctor called out.

Julian stood right beside the bed, holding Mariana’s hand in a vice grip, letting her squeeze his fingers until they went numb. He wiped the sweat from her forehead with a damp cloth, whispering words of love and encouragement into her ear with every contraction.

"You are strong, Mari," Julian whispered, his face inches from hers. "You are the strongest woman I have ever known. Come on, my love... bring our baby into the world."

With a final, desperate cry of pure effort, Mariana leaned forward, squeezing Julian’s hand with all her remaining strength.

A moment later, the sharp, miraculous, loud cry of a newborn baby echoed through the delivery room, cutting through the exhaustion and tension like a beam of pure light.

"It's a girl!" the nurse announced happily, wrapping the tiny, squirming baby in a soft pink blanket. "A healthy, beautiful baby girl!"

Julian burst into tears, dropping his head against Mariana’s shoulder as the nurse laid the newborn onto Mariana’s bare chest.

The baby had a thick mop of dark hair, big, bright dark eyes, and tiny fingers that immediately reached out, curling tightly around Julian’s pinky finger.

Mariana wept tears of pure joy, kissing the baby’s forehead over and over again. "Look at her, Julian... look at our daughter..."

"She’s perfect, Mari," Julian sobbed, holding both of his women in his arms. "She’s completely perfect."

They named her Esperanza—Hope.

Three hours later, Mateo stood outside the recovery room window, peering through the glass with a huge, goofy grin on his face, holding a giant teddy bear. When Julian stepped out into the hallway, Mateo threw his arms around him, laughing loudly.

"A girl!" Mateo cheered. "I have a niece!"

"She’s beautiful, Mateo," Julian smiled through his happy tears. "She has Mariana’s eyes."

As they celebrated in the hospital hallway, Julian’s phone rang.

He pulled it out of his pocket. The screen showed a notification from Officer Delgado at the police precinct.

Julian stepped away into a quiet corner of the hallway to answer the call. "Officer Delgado?"

"Mr. González," Delgado’s voice came through crisp and clear. "I wanted to inform you that your mother, Carmen González, was taken into custody two hours ago."

Julian froze. "What happened?"

"She attempted to show up at your workplace at the hardware store near Central de Abasto, screaming at your manager and demanding to know where you were living," Delgado explained. "Your manager called the police, and my officers arrested her on the spot for violating the court-issued protective order."

Julian closed his eyes, taking a deep, steadying breath. "Is she in jail?"

"She is currently in a holding cell awaiting a formal hearing before a magistrate tomorrow morning," Delgado said. "Given her violation of a judge's order and the severity of the pending assault charges, the prosecutor is recommending mandatory psychological evaluation and community service, along with a permanent restraining order."

Julian felt no sadness. He felt no desire for revenge. He felt only a profound, peaceful sense of finality.

"Thank you, Officer," Julian said softly. "Let the law handle her."
