Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Lauren’s expression shifted from smug confidence to slight annoyance. "Clara, please. Don't start your dramatic accusations again. We all know you're just embarrassed because your daughter got caught—"
"Garrick," I said, ignoring her completely. "Turn on the living room television."
Garrick pulled the master remote from the sideboard and switched on the sixty-five-inch screen mounted above the fireplace. He opened the media player app, selecting the wireless feed from my phone.
"What is the meaning of this theatre?" Richard demanded, stepping toward the center of the room. "We do not need to watch videos while we are trying to resolve a family crisis!"
"Sit down, Richard," Nina said firmly, stepping back out of the guest room and displaying her official legal bar card. "Unless you want the police called to this address immediately to execute an arrest warrant for child endangerment, I suggest you all watch the screen."
Margaret's mouth snapped shut. Lauren shifted uncomfortably on the sofa, her hands tightening around her phone.
The video feed began to play on the large screen.
The timestamp was crystal clear in the corner: Yesterday, 2:14 PM.
Margaret watched as her on-screen self walked into the kitchen. Richard watched himself reading by the window.
And then, every eye in the room locked onto Lauren.
On the screen, Lauren stood up from the sofa. She looked toward the kitchen, waited three seconds, and walked into Margaret’s guest bedroom.
Margaret frowned, leaning forward. "What... why were you in my room, Lauren?"
Lauren didn't answer. Her face had gone completely white.
Three minutes passed on the video. Then, on-screen Lauren walked back out. The camera captured a crystal-clear, close-up angle of her hand holding the burgundy velvet box—the exact box containing Margaret’s mother’s gold bracelet. The footage showed her unzipping her leather tote bag, sliding the box beneath her cashmere scarf, and sitting back down on the sofa.
2:21 PM.
On-screen Margaret re-emerged, panicking about her missing bracelet. On-screen Lauren pointed her finger toward little Emma, who was playing innocently with wooden blocks on the rug.
The video ended. The screen went black.
A silence so profound, so heavy, fell over the apartment that you could hear the soft hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Margaret stood frozen, her eyes wide, staring at the black screen as if her brain refused to process the visual information it had just received. She looked at the TV, then slowly turned her head to look at Lauren.
"Lauren..." Margaret whispered, her voice trembling, stripped of all its former righteous authority. "Lauren... what was that?"
Lauren sat on the sofa, her breathing shallow, her eyes darting frantically around the room like a cornered animal. "Mom... wait... that's... that video is modified! She edited it! Clara edited that video to frame me!"
"It’s a secure, cloud-encrypted continuous feed from a hidden high-definition camera, Lauren," I said, stepping closer to her. "It is digitally timestamped and watermarked. It cannot be edited. It cannot be tampered with."
"You spied on us?!" Lauren shrieked, jumping up from the sofa, her voice cracking in wild, defensive hysteria. "You put hidden cameras in your apartment to spy on Garrick’s family?! You sick, paranoid freak!"
"We put hidden cameras in this apartment," Garrick roared, stepping directly into Lauren's face, "because over the last six months, thousands of dollars in cash, watches, and jewelry have mysteriously gone missing every single time you stayed here!"
Richard gasped, grabbing the edge of the dining table for support. "What?!"
"It was you," Margaret breathed, her hands flying to her mouth as the terrible, sickening realization finally broke through her denial. "The diamond earrings in October... your father's gold watch in August... the envelope of cash from my purse... it was you, Lauren? Not the housekeepers? Not Clara?"
Lauren backed away, pressing her spine against the glass windows of the balcony. "Mom, listen to me! I needed the money! Julian owes people! He was going to leave me if I couldn't help him pay off his debts!"
"Julian?!" Garrick shouted. "You stole from your own mother, framed a three-year-old child, and sat there drinking coffee while Mom cut Emma's hair and put her out in the freezing cold—all for your deadbeat boyfriend?!"
"I didn't tell Mom to cut her hair!" Lauren screamed, tears of panic finally streaming down her face. "Mom did that on her own! Mom was the one who put her on the balcony! I just said she was near the room! I didn't know Mom was going to go crazy!"
Margaret looked as though she had been struck by lightning. She turned to look at her daughter—the daughter she had spoiled, protected, and defended for thirty-two years—and realized that Lauren had thrown her straight to the wolves without a single second of hesitation.

"You..." Margaret whispered, her voice breaking into a ragged, pathetic sob. "You let me do that to my granddaughter..."
"No, Margaret," I said, my voice as sharp as broken glass. "You did that to your granddaughter because you wanted to. Lauren gave you an excuse, but the cruelty was all yours."
