Chapter 5 - The Demands

I stepped to the center of the living room, taking the formal legal folder from Nina’s hands and opening it flat on the dining table.

"Here is how this ends," I stated, my voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Richard, Margaret, and Lauren all looked at me. The arrogant, unified front of the Dawson family had completely disintegrated, leaving behind three broken, terrified individuals staring at the legal documents before them.

"First," I said, looking directly at Lauren. "You will open your bag right now, retrieve Margaret’s velvet box, and set it on this table. Then, you will pack your things and leave this building within ten minutes. If you ever set foot inside our home again, or attempt to contact my daughter, I will personally hand this video footage to the Chicago Police Department alongside an inventory of every stolen item from the past six months."

Lauren didn't hesitate. She scrambled across the room, grabbed her tote bag, pulled out the burgundy velvet box, and slammed it onto the table. Tears were pouring down her cheeks, but no one moved to comfort her. Not her mother, not her father, not her brother.

"Go," Garrick commanded Lauren, his voice filled with utter disgust. "Get out before I throw you out myself."

Lauren grabbed her coat and her luggage, fleeing through the front door without looking back once. The heavy slam of the door echoed down the hallway.

I turned my eyes to Margaret and Richard.

"Second," I continued, pointing to the legal documents on the table. "You will sign these voluntary, legally binding permanent restraining orders and non-disclosure agreements prepared by my attorney."

Margaret blinked through her tears. "Restraining... restraining orders? Clara, please... I am her grandmother..."

"You lost the right to call yourself her grandmother the moment you locked her out on that balcony, Margaret," I said coldly. "Under these terms, you and Richard are strictly prohibited from coming within one thousand feet of Emma, her daycare, her school, or any property owned by Garrick and me. Furthermore, you will pay for her full psychological evaluation and pediatric recovery care."

"Garrick..." Richard pleaded, looking at his son with hollow, desperate eyes. "Garrick, son... please. Don't let her cut us out of your lives forever. We made a terrible, tragic mistake... we were misled by Lauren..."

Garrick looked at his father. For years, Garrick had sought his father's approval, working late hours, staying quiet during family arguments, trying to be the dutiful son.

Now, Garrick looked at Richard as if he were looking at a stranger.

"You stood in that dining room yesterday, Dad," Garrick said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute finality. "You stood right there while Mom berated my wife and humiliated my daughter. You didn't check on Emma. You didn't ask a single question. You just wanted to protect your own comfort."

Garrick stepped up to his father, leaning in close.

"Sign the papers, Dad. Because if you don't sign them right now, Nina is calling Detective Miller at the First District, and Mom will be spending her golden years in a state penitentiary for child abuse."

Margaret let out a choked gasp. She looked at Garrick's eyes, searching for a single trace of the obedient son she had manipulated for decades. She found none.

With shaking hands, Richard picked up the silver pen resting on the table, pulled the documents toward himself, and signed his name on the designated lines. Then, he passed the pen to Margaret.

Margaret wept softly, her shoulders shaking as she scribbled her signature at the bottom of the page.

"It's done," Nina said, collecting the signed copies and verifying each signature with her official seal. "These will be filed with the Cook County Family Court by noon today. Any violation will result in immediate law enforcement intervention."

I walked over to the guest room door, opened it, and lifted Emma into my arms. She wrapped her small arms tightly around my neck, resting her head on my shoulder.

I walked back into the living room, standing before Margaret and Richard one last time.

"You have thirty minutes to clear your personal belongings out of our guest room and leave," I said softly. "If you are still here at nine-thirty, security will escort you to the curb."

I turned my back on them, taking Emma into the master bedroom and shutting the door, leaving Garrick to oversee the expulsion of his parents from our lives.
