Chapter 3 - Dawn at the Boardroom

By 7:45 AM the next morning, the temperature outside had dropped, coating the suburban lawns in a sharp, glittering layer of frost. Inside the glass-walled headquarters of Apex Capital, however, the atmosphere was sub-zero.

Richard sat at the far end of the mahogany boardroom table, his tie loosened, his face pale and slick with sweat. Flanking him was corporate defense counsel, a high-priced lawyer who looked like he wanted nothing more than to distance himself from his client. Across the table sat the three managing partners of Apex Capital, along with an independent investigator Elena had assigned to brief them.

The double doors opened, and Elena walked in.

She wasn't wearing designer labels. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer, simple silver earrings, and carried a single leather portfolio case. She looked composed, sharp, and entirely in control.

“Elena,” the senior managing partner, Arthur Vance, said, standing up halfway to greet her. “Thank you for coming on such short notice. When your firm flagged these discrepancies, we assumed it was a routine compliance audit.”

“It started as one, Arthur,” Elena said, taking a seat directly opposite Richard. She didn't look at her brother-in-law, though she could see his hands trembling on the polished wood. “Then we followed the paper trail. It wasn't an oversight. It was a calculated, multi-tier siphon of acquisition funds funneled through three shell companies registered in Delaware.”

Richard slammed his palm against the table. “She’s lying! This is a personal vendetta! She’s bitter because of family disputes—she tried to ruin our Thanksgiving over petty jealousy, and now she’s manufacturing a corporate scandal!”

Arthur Vance turned a cold, unyielding stare toward Richard. “Richard, your personal life is of zero interest to this board. However, the fact that you transferred one point four million dollars of venture capital into an account matching the exact address of your secondary residence in the hills is of paramount interest.”

Richard swallowed hard, his voice dropping an octave. “That was... that was an internal loan. Approved under—”

“Approved by whom?” Elena opened her portfolio and slid a single document across the table. “There is no board resolution. There is no signature from Arthur. There is only your electronic stamp forging the compliance signature of an auditor who left the firm eight months ago.”

The defense attorney glanced at the paper, adjusted his glasses, and slowly closed his leather folder. He looked at Richard, gave a microscopic shake of his head, and leaned back. He knew there was no defending this.

“The authorities have already been notified,” Elena said evenly, looking right into Richard’s panicked eyes. “The asset freeze on your personal and corporate accounts was signed off by a federal judge at 6:00 AM. Your cars, your investment properties, and your bank accounts are currently under receivership.”

Richard stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back with a loud clatter. “You can’t do this! You’re destroying my family!”

“No, Richard,” Elena said, her voice cutting through the room like glass. “You destroyed your family the moment you thought your wealth made you untouchable. You and Vanessa spent years looking down on people who built their lives with honesty. You traded your integrity for status symbols. And yesterday, you chose to humiliate two innocent children just to feed your arrogance.”

She closed her portfolio with a crisp snap.

“Enjoy the fallout,” she added. “Because unlike your finances, this is one hole you aren't going to buy your way out of.”
