Chapter 9 - Foundations of Glass

On a warm Saturday afternoon in May, Elena stood on the balcony of her newly expanded downtown office suite.
The sun was high in the sky, casting bright, golden light over the city streets below. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, she could see the bustling traffic, the pedestrians walking with purpose, and the steady hum of a city that operated on real work and genuine effort.
Her assistant knocked gently on the open door.
“Elena, the board of the regional banking coalition is on line two. They want to confirm your keynote speech for the financial ethics summit next month.”
“Tell them I’ll be there,” Elena said, turning away from the window with a confident smile. “And make sure the topic centers on corporate transparency and forensic accountability.”
“Will do,” her assistant smiled, stepping out.
Elena walked back to her desk. On the corner sat a simple framed photograph taken during their mountain cabin trip in December. In it, she, her son, and her daughter were standing knee-deep in fresh white snow, wrapped in colorful scarves, laughing so hard their eyes were crinkled shut.

There were no designer labels in the photo. There were no expensive status symbols, no stage-managed poses, and no fake smiles.
There was only pure, unadulterated joy—built on love, honesty, and a mother’s fierce, unwavering protection.
