Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

The custody hearing was suspended immediately. The judge not only denied David any contact with Emma, but she also issued a permanent restraining order and ordered the immediate seizure of David’s passport.

But the real blow came outside the courtroom.

As David and Margaret walked down the marble steps of the courthouse, flanked by their lawyers, they were met by four federal agents.

"David Vance?" the lead agent asked, holding up a badge. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny. Margaret Vance, you are under arrest as an accessory to fraud and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."

Margaret screamed as an agent stepped forward and placed handcuffs on her wrists, her precious pearls clinking against her collarbone. David tried to pull away, his face contorted in a mix of rage and terror.

"This is a mistake!" David yelled, his eyes searching the crowd of reporters who had gathered, their cameras flashing. "Sarah! Tell them! Tell them it was a mistake!"

Sarah watched from the top of the steps, standing with the help of a silver cane. Her father stood beside her, his arm supporting her shoulder.

She didn't say a word. She just watched as the man who had whispered “Nobody is coming for you” was shoved into the back of a police cruiser, his face pressed against the cold glass.
