Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Office

At 1:00 PM, I arrived at the regional headquarters of my firm for my first formal day as Regional Finance Director.

I was dressed in an ocean-blue wool blazer, crisp white silk blouse, and black tailored trousers, my hair swept up into a professional bun. I looked every bit the corporate executive who commanded a twelve-thousand-dollar monthly salary.

As I walked through the glass doors of the lobby, my executive assistant, Sarah, rushed over with a hot cup of coffee and a tablet clutched to her chest.

"Congratulations again on the promotion, Director Vance!" Sarah said enthusiastically. "The board sent a bouquet of orchids to your new corner office!"

"Thank you, Sarah," I smiled, taking the coffee. "How are the morning schedules looking?"

Sarah’s smile flickered, and she leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a whisper. "Um... there’s a small situation, Director. There’s a woman sitting in the executive waiting area. She’s been there for an hour, demanding to see you. She told the receptionist she was your mother-in-law and that it was a family emergency."

My smile evaporated into cold steel.

Bernice.

She thought she could use my professional workplace to corner me, assuming I would be too embarrassed in front of my colleagues and superiors to make a scene.

"Is she alone?" I asked calmly.

"Yes. She tried to walk past security twice, but the front desk kept her in the waiting lounge."

"Good," I said, taking a slow sip of my coffee. "Sarah, call building security and tell them to send two guards up to the fourteenth floor. Then notify the front desk that I will see her now."

I walked into the spacious, glass-walled waiting lounge.

Bernice was sitting on a plush leather sofa, wearing a dark coat, holding a tissue in her hand. The moment she saw me walk in, she sprang up from the couch, her eyes widening, and hurried across the carpet toward me, her arms outstretched.

"Elena! Oh, thank God!" Bernice cried loud enough for two junior analysts near the copy machine to turn their heads. "Elena, my sweet girl, please! You have to stop this madness!"

"Keep your voice down, Bernice," I said, standing my ground, my hands folded neatly in front of my blazer. "This is a place of business."

"I don't care about business!" Bernice wept, trying to grab my wrists, but I stepped back, keeping two feet of space between us. "Keaton was just served with divorce papers at his job! They walked right into his team meeting and handed him a summons! His boss sent him home! They froze his checking account! He can't even buy lunch!"

"He should have thought about lunch before he forged my name on a four-hundred-thousand-dollar fraudulent loan," I said coldly.

"He did it for his family!" Bernice sobbed, dropping to her knees right there in the middle of the executive lounge, creating a full-blown spectacle. "He’s your husband! How can you be so heartless?! You’re making twelve thousand dollars a month! You’re rich now! Just pay off the debt and take him back! He’s crying in his car, Elena! He has nowhere to go!"

Several employees stopped in the hallway, staring in shock at the sight of an older woman weeping on her knees before the newly appointed Regional Finance Director.

I didn't flush with embarrassment. I didn't hide my face. I looked down at her with pure, unadulterated contempt.

"Stand up, Bernice," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the lounge. "Your dramatic performances don't work on me anymore."

"I won't get up until you drop the police report!" Bernice shrieked, slamming her fists against the carpet. "You're going to put my boys in prison! Austin is just a baby! He made a mistake with his crypto investments! You can't ruin his life!"

At that moment, the elevator doors slid open, and two uniformed building security officers stepped out, accompanied by my assistant, Sarah.

"Director Vance?" the head guard asked. "Is this woman harassing you?"

"Yes, Officer," I said clearly, pointing down at Bernice. "This woman is Bernice Vance. She is currently subject to a temporary civil restraining order filed two hours ago. She has trespassed onto private corporate property to intimidate an officer of this company regarding an ongoing criminal fraud investigation."

Bernice’s jaw dropped. She looked around at the security guards, then up at me, realizing for the first time that her public embarrassment tactic had completely failed.

"Please escort her off the premises," I told the guards. "And if she sets foot in this building again, have her formally arrested for criminal trespass."

The two guards stepped forward, firmly taking Bernice by her arms and hoisting her up off the floor.

"Elena! You monster!" Bernice screamed as she was dragged backward toward the elevator doors, her shoes dragging across the polished tile floor. "You heartless, arrogant witch! God will punish you for this! You’ll rot in hell!"

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off her shrill screams mid-sentence.

I turned back to the employees standing in the hallway, smoothed down the front of my wool blazer, and smiled calmly.

"Back to work, everyone," I said smoothly. "We have a quarterly audit to complete."
