Chapter 4 - THE UNEXPECTED ALLY

"May I come in?" Eleanor asked, stepping past Daniel without waiting for an answer. Her sharp eyes scanned the grand foyer, taking in the faint smell of bleach that still hung in the air from last night.

When her gaze landed on me standing near the hallway, her strict composure cracked slightly. She saw my hand wrapped in bandages, the tired circles under my eyes, and the frail way I held myself.

"Evelyn," Eleanor said softly, walking over to me. For the first time in five years, the prideful judge reached out and gently rested her gloved hands on my arms. "Look at you... what has that wretched girl done to you?"

"Eleanor..." I stammered, bewildered. "What are you doing here?"

"Last night at midnight, Vanessa called me," Eleanor explained, her voice hardening with righteous anger. "She didn't know that I have spent forty years on the judicial bench. She thought she could manipulate me into using my legal influence to help her file an emergency injunction against Daniel for 'unlawful eviction' and 'elderly endangerment'."

Daniel walked over, his brows furrowed. "She tried to recruit you?"

"She lied through her teeth," Eleanor sneered, pulling off her gloves. "She told me that Evelyn had attacked her in a fit of dementia, that you had lost your mind, Daniel, and that you threw her out in the rain to protect a dangerous, incompetent woman."

Eleanor pulled a small digital recorder from her coat pocket and set it on the foyer table.

"I recorded the entire conversation," Eleanor said plainly. "In it, Vanessa offered me twenty percent of Evelyn's estate trust if I used my position to fast-track the conservatorship paperwork through the probate court this morning."

I gasped, covering my mouth with my good hand. "She was trying to bribe a judge?!"

"A judge who happens to be your sister-in-law," Eleanor said, looking at me with deep remorse. "Evelyn... five years ago, Vanessa came to my office and presented fake audio recordings making it sound like you were telling the entire family that I was a greedy leech who only cared about my brother's money. She drove a wedge between us so we wouldn't talk, so I wouldn't be here to protect you after my brother died."

Tears sprang to my eyes. "I never said those things, Eleanor! I swear on my life!"

"I know that now," Eleanor said gently, squeezing my shoulder. "I realized it the moment she offered me a bribe last night. My brother Arthur loved you with all his heart, Evelyn. He would turn in his grave if he knew what this vulture did to his home."

Eleanor turned to the two men in dark suits standing behind her.

"This is Marcus Vance and Sarah Lin," Eleanor introduced them. "They are the top federal prosecutors in the state, and former clerks of mine. We are not just going to divorce Vanessa, Daniel. We are going to lock her and Dr. Benson away for federal wire fraud, bribery, grand larceny, and felony elder abuse."

Daniel looked at his aunt, a profound look of relief washing over his exhausted face. "Where do we start?"

Eleanor smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that had struck fear into the hearts of criminals for decades.

"We start by setting a trap," Eleanor declared.
