Chapter 5 - THE TRAP IS SET

By Monday morning, Vanessa believed she was winning.

She sat in the plush corner office of her divorce attorney, Richard Vance (no relation to Eleanor, but a notorious high-priced legal mercenary known for tearing families apart in high-stakes divorces).

Vanessa was wearing an elegant black dress, silver pearl earrings, and an oversized pair of sunglasses to hide her carefully applied fake makeup—she had used dark eyeshadow to create fake bruises on her wrists and cheek to pretend she was the victim of domestic violence.

"The narrative is simple, Richard," Vanessa said, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue. "Daniel snapped under the stress of his mother's declining mental health. He pushed me against the counter, bruised my arms, and forced me out into the storm. I have medical records from Dr. Benson proving Evelyn is dangerous and incompetent."

Richard Vance checked his gold watch, smiling greedily. "If we file the emergency domestic violence petition alongside the conservatorship request today, the judge will freeze Daniel's assets, grant you temporary possession of the estate, and order Evelyn transferred to the state psychiatric facility for evaluation within forty-eight hours."

"Good," Vanessa hissed, her eyes gleaming with cold triumph. "I want that old hag out of my house by tonight."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the law office were pushed open.

Three federal agents in navy blue vests bearing the letters FBI stepped into the room, followed by Daniel, Eleanor, and prosecutor Marcus Vance.

Richard Vance immediately stood up, outraged. "What is the meaning of this?! This is a private legal consultation! Get out!"

"Richard Vance, step away from your client," Special Agent Miller ordered, pulling out an official arrest warrant. "Vanessa Hayes-Miller, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate money laundering, extortion, and criminal elder abuse."

Vanessa’s face went ghastly pale. She stumbled backward, knocking over her cup of coffee, spilling black liquid all over her white leather purse.

"What?! This is ridiculous!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the window. "Daniel, what did you do?! Tell them to stop!"

Daniel stepped forward, standing beside his Aunt Eleanor. He held out his tablet, playing the crisp, crystal-clear footage recorded by the security firm:

The footage showed Vanessa pouring the filthy bleach water over my head, laughing sneeringly, kicking the bucket, and stepping on my fingers with her heel.

Then, Eleanor pressed play on her digital recorder:

“If you use your judicial influence to clear the probate papers today, Eleanor, twenty percent of Evelyn’s eight-million-dollar trust is yours...”

Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling steel handcuffs from his belt. "We also executed a search warrant at Dr. Benson's clinic an hour ago. He is currently in federal custody. He confessed everything and handed over six months of text messages detailing the financial kickbacks you paid him to falsify medical records."

"No... no, no, no!" Vanessa screamed, her perfect composure shattering into hysterics. "It wasn't me! It was Benson's idea! Daniel, help me! I'm your wife!"

"You were a nightmare in my house," Daniel said softly, his voice devoid of pity. "And now you are a felon."

The federal agents grabbed Vanessa’s arms, pulling her hands behind her back and snapping the steel cuffs onto her wrists. Her fake pearls caught on her collar and snapped, scattering white beads across the hardwood floor as she was dragged out of the office, sobbing and screaming wildly for her lawyer.
