Chapter 4 - The Asset War

By Monday morning, the corporate world of Chicago woke up to an explosion. The business pages didn't carry the beautiful photos of the Blake-Rivera wedding; instead, the headlines screamed: PENDELTON GLOBAL ACQUIRES TAYLOR GUARD; FILES RECORD-BREAKING ESPIONAGE LAWSUIT AGAINST BLAKE SYSTEMS.

Inside his glass tower on Wacker Drive, Christopher Blake stood before his massive windows, his face pale with a cold, terrifying fury. James Harrison stood near the door, holding a stack of legal briefs that looked like a death warrant.

"How did she get to Pendelton?" Christopher hissed, his voice trembling with a rage he could barely contain. "She was a penniless coder! She didn't know anyone outside of that low-rent state institute!"

"It was Margaret Chen," James said, his voice quiet. "She arranged the meeting. And Christopher... it’s worse than the investment. Pendelton’s legal team filed a temporary restraining order in federal court. All of our integration servers have been seized for forensic auditing. They have our email logs with Nova-Tech."

Christopher spun around, his eyes wild. "How? Those logs were on a secure, closed-circuit server at the Palmer Hotel! No one had access to that network except my senior executive team!"

"The children," James said, a note of grim realization in his voice. "The triplets were playing with a modified tablet connected to the hotel's smart building interface. We thought they were playing video games. They weren't. The boy... he mapped our data packets through the Wi-Fi."

Christopher let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "Three six-year-olds pulled down a three-billion-dollar acquisition? Are you out of your mind, James?"

"They didn't do it alone," James countered. "They used Elena’s encryption framework to mask their intrusion. We didn't even see the leak until the data was already sitting on Pendelton’s secure servers."

Christopher slammed his fist against his mahogany desk, sending his crystal water glass shattering to the floor. "I want her ruined! I don't care about the injunction! Call the District Attorney. Tell them she stole proprietary data from Blake Systems before she walked out on the wedding. File criminal charges for corporate theft!"

"We can't do that, Christopher," James said, stepping back. "If we open that door, Pendelton's lawyers will demand discovery on our previous acquisitions. Catherine Morris, Maria Santos... they’ve already contacted Pendelton's legal defense fund. They’re preparing a class-action racketeering suit against you."

The house of cards Christopher Blake had spent twenty years building was beginning to shake at its foundation. The women he had silenced, the futures he had stolen—they were no longer isolated, broken individuals. They were becoming an army, organized and funded by the largest venture firm in the country, led by a woman he had dismissed as a manageable, insecure single mother.

"Then we change the venue," Christopher whispered, his blue eyes hardening into a cold, desperate malice. "Elena Rivera cares about exactly one thing: those three loud, annoying children. If she won't give up the master key for money or legal threats, she’ll give it up to keep them safe."

James stared at his partner, a look of profound horror crossing his face. "Christopher, what are you talking about? That’s kidnapping. That’s a federal felony."

"I am talking about leverage, James," Christopher said, turning back to the window. "And I am talking about survival. Go find out where she’s hiding them."
