Chapter 6 - The Montana Sanctuary

The Pendelton ranch in Big Sky, Montana, was less of a home and more of a private fortress disguised as a luxury lodge. Surrounded by thousands of acres of rugged mountains and guarded by a state-of-the-art security grid, it provided the first true safety the Rivera family had felt in weeks.

For three weeks, the world watched the slow, brutal dismantling of Blake Systems. With Pendelton’s funding and the evidence provided by Miles, the FBI had officially opened a criminal investigation into Christopher Blake for violations of the Logan Act and industrial espionage.

But Christopher remained free on a massive ten-million-dollar bail, confined to his luxury penthouse in Chicago, his legal team filing endless motions to delay the inevitable.

In Montana, Elena spent her days refining Taylor Guard, preparing it for its official commercial launch. The children had adapted quickly to the mountain air—Noah’s nightmares had ceased, replaced by tales of the horses he watched in the valley, while Mia had taken to organizing the ranch staff’s inventory systems with terrifying efficiency.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the snow-capped peaks, painting the sky in shades of violet and gold, Elena sat on the wide wooden porch, watching Miles read a thick manual on network architecture.

"Mom?" Miles asked, looking up.

"Yes, Miles?"

"Do you think Christopher is ever going to go to jail?"

Elena walked over, sitting beside him on the rustic bench. "The police and the judges are working on it, sweetie. He did some very bad things, and he tried to hurt a lot of people. The truth is out now, and that’s what matters."

"I’m glad you didn't marry him," Miles said softly, leaning his head against her arm. "He smelled like expensive soap, but his eyes were always cold. Like a robot that was trying to look like a person."

Elena wrapped her arm around her son, a tear slipping down her cheek. She realized how close she had come to sacrificing her children’s happiness for a false sense of security. If it hadn't been for their brilliant, stubborn refusal to accept Christopher's lies, she would currently be trapped in a nightmare.

Arthur Pendelton stepped onto the porch, carrying two glasses of iced tea. He handed one to Elena, his expression uncharacteristically warm.

"The federal judge just threw out Blake's final appeal regarding the server seizure," Pendelton said, sitting down. "The forensic team found the encrypted files linking him directly to the foreign telecom payments. The Department of Justice is upgrading his indictment to treasonous conspiracy tomorrow morning. His bail will be revoked."

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath. "It's finally over?"

"Almost," Pendelton said. "He’s desperate, Elena. My security team in Chicago reported that his penthouse is empty. He missed his check-in with his legal team three hours ago. The electronic monitor on his ankle was found attached to a stray dog in Lincoln Park."

Elena’s body went rigid. "He ran?"

May you like

"He ran," Pendelton confirmed, his gray eyes darkening. "But he can't leave the country. Every airport, border crossing, and private marina is flagged. He has no access to his corporate funds. He’s a rat in a corner, Elena. And a rat with nothing left to lose is the most dangerous kind."

Before Elena could respond, the ranch's perimeter alarm began to wail—a loud, rhythmic klaxon that shattered the peace of the Montana evening.
