Chapter 6 - The Basement Archive

The alley behind 412 Elm Street was dark, narrow, and reeked of damp brick and wet garbage. High above us, a single security camera was mounted under the rusty overhang of the second-story fire escape, its tiny red LED power light blinking steadily through the rain.

Richard parked the SUV near the dumpster, blocking the alley entrance from view. We stepped out into the pouring rain, pulling our coats tightly around us.

We hurried down the concrete steps leading to the building's basement door. I knocked loudly on the reinforced metal panel.

"Mr. Henderson!" I called out, banging my fist against the steel. "Mr. Henderson, it's Hannah! Maddie's sister!"

For a long, agonizing minute, there was no answer. Only the sound of rain drumming against the metal gutters.

Then, the heavy deadbolt clicked open. The door swung inward, revealing a frail, elderly man with thick glasses, wearing a flannel bathrobe over his work clothes. He was holding a heavy flashlight.

"Hannah?" Mr. Henderson blinked in surprise. "Good Lord, girl, what are you doing here at this hour? The police were here earlier! They put yellow tape across Maddie's door upstairs!"

"Mr. Henderson, please," I begged, stepping inside the warm, dry hallway. "We need your help. This is my brother-in-law, Richard. He’s a lawyer representing Maddie."

Mr. Henderson looked at Richard, then back at me, his weathered face creasing with deep worry. "I heard what happened on the news... they said Maddie hurt the baby. Hannah, I couldn't believe it. That girl was so sweet... always brought me cookies at Christmas..."

"Maddie didn't hurt Mia, Mr. Henderson!" I said fiercely. "She was being terrorized by her ex-boyfriend, Ethan! He was breaking into her apartment!"

Mr. Henderson’s eyes widened behind his thick lenses. "Ethan? That tall, slick fella with the dark hair?"

"Yes!" I gasped. "You saw him?"

"Saw him?" Mr. Henderson spat on the concrete floor. "I chased him out of the alley three nights ago! I told him if he kept coming around here screaming at Maddie through the alley window, I’d call the cops! He told me to mind my own damn business or he'd burn the building down!"

Richard stepped forward instantly, his voice sharp and precise. "Mr. Henderson, did you report that interaction to the police?"

"No," the old man shook his head regretfully. "Maddie came down twenty minutes later crying her eyes out. She begged me not to call the police. She said Ethan promised he’d leave for good if she didn't make a fuss. Lord help me... I should have called anyway."

"Mr. Henderson," Richard said, putting a firm hand on the old man's shoulder. "That camera in the alley—is it connected to a recording unit?"

"Sure is," Henderson nodded. "Monitors the parking pad and the rear entrance. Keep the DVR in my workshop right here."

He led us down a narrow, wood-paneled hallway into a cluttered basement room filled with woodworking tools, paint cans, and old lawnmowers. On a dusty workbench in the corner sat a black digital video recorder hooked up to an old CRT monitor.

Richard moved past him, pulling a pair of latex gloves and a high-capacity USB flash drive from his coat pocket. "Mr. Henderson, I need your permission to access and copy the footage from the last fourteen days."

"Take whatever you need, son," Henderson said, grabbing a stool for me to sit on. "If that bastard was hurting that poor baby, I want him in a cage."

Richard sat down at the workbench, his fingers flying across the DVR control panel. The monitor flickered to life, splitting into four distinct camera views.

"Setting time filter for three days ago," Richard murmured, scrubbing backward through the recorded video files. "Let's look at the alley entrance between midnight and 6:00 AM."

The screen showed a dark, rain-streaked view of the alley door.

At 2:14 AM, a shadowy figure appeared on the screen.

The man was wearing a dark hoodie and gloves. He walked up to Maddie's alley door, pulled a set of keys from his pocket, and unlocked the heavy metal deadbolt without hesitation.

"Zoom in on the face," I breathed, leaning over Richard's shoulder.

Richard brought up the high-definition enhancement tool. The digital noise cleared slightly as the man turned his head toward the light over the door.

It was Ethan Vance.

"There he is," Richard whispered, his eyes gleaming with intense professional focus. "Unauthorized entry via key access at 2:14 AM."

"Keep watching," I urged.

Richard fast-forwarded the footage. At 4:32 AM—more than two hours later—the alley door swung open again.

Ethan stepped out into the night. But he wasn't alone.

He was dragging Maddie by her arm. Maddie was wearing her pajamas, clutching the tiny yellow onesie against her chest, her face distorted in absolute terror.

On the video, with no audio, the physical dynamic was chillingly clear. Ethan shoved Maddie against the brick wall of the building, pinning her by her throat. He brought his face inches from hers, pointing a finger menacingly at her eyes. He reached down, grabbed the tiny bundle in her arms, and squeezed it violently against Maddie's chest.

Maddie dropped to her knees on the cold concrete, her hands clasped together in a desperate posture of pure begging.

Ethan slapped her across the face with the back of his hand, sending her sprawling onto the wet pavement. Then he pulled her up by her hair, shoved her back inside the building, and locked the door from the outside.

I sat on the wooden stool, tears pouring silently down my face.

The video didn't just contradict Arthur Vance's absurd story about postpartum psychosis. It shattered it into a thousand bloody pieces. It showed a horrifying, terrifying truth: my sister had been subjected to unspeakable physical torture, forced to watch her infant daughter be used as a human bargaining chip by a psychopath.

"My God," Richard whispered, his voice trembling with rare, profound anger as he hit the download button on his flash drive. "That monster."

"Is that enough?" I choked out, looking at Richard. "Is this enough to destroy Arthur Vance in court tomorrow?"

Richard pulled the completed USB drive from the DVR unit and held it tightly in his fist.

"This isn't just enough to destroy Arthur Vance's custody petition, Hannah," Richard said, his eyes burning with cold, lethal determination. "This is enough to put Ethan Vance in a state penitentiary for twenty years... and disbar his father for filing a fraudulent affidavit."

He looked at his watch. 4:15 AM.

"Let's go," Richard said, standing up. "We have four hours to get this footage to Detective Rodriguez and prepare our emergency filing for the judge."
