Chapter 7 - The Ambush at Sunset

While Richard spent the pre-dawn hours filing emergency evidentiary motions with the Franklin County Domestic Relations Court, I returned to Nationwide Children’s Hospital under heavy police escort.

By 7:00 AM, the morning light was breaking over Columbus, painting the sky in pale shades of gold and slate gray. Inside Trauma Bay 3, the atmosphere had shifted dramatically.

Mia had been extubated.

The mechanical ventilator had been removed, replaced by a soft plastic nasal cannula delivering gentle oxygen to her nose. Her breathing was still slightly rapid, but her chest was rising and falling smoothly. When I walked into the room, her tiny, dark blue eyes were open—clear, bright, and looking around the room with newborn curiosity.

Dr. Thorne was standing beside the bed, a warm smile gracing her face. "Her latest lung X-ray shows seventy percent re-expansion, Hannah. She’s taking small amounts of pedialyte from a specialized dropper. She’s a fighter."

I broke down, stepping up to the bassinet and gently stroking Mia’s soft, peach-fuzz hair. "Thank you, Dr. Thorne. Thank you so much."

"Don't thank me yet," Dr. Thorne said softly, glancing at the clock on the wall. "The custody hearing starts in two hours. Have you heard from your sister's legal team?"

"Richard is handling everything," I said, my confidence restored by the weight of the silver USB drive currently sitting in my coat pocket. "Ethan Vance isn't going to get away with this."

At that exact moment, Detective Rodriguez walked into the room. Her suit was wrinkled, her eyes bloodshot from working through the night, but her expression was fierce and triumphant.

"Ms. Miller," Rodriguez said, stepping up to the bed. "We got him."

I gasped. "Ethan?"

"State Highway Patrol picked him up an hour ago at a truck stop near the Indiana border," Rodriguez announced. "He was trying to buy a fake ID with ten thousand dollars in cash he took from a business account. When the troopers pulled him over, he fought back. They found Maddie’s spare apartment key and a bloody kitchen towel in his duffel bag."

"Does his father know?" I asked.

"Arthur Vance was at the state police barracks thirty minutes ago trying to post cash bail," Rodriguez sneered with profound disgust. "But we hit Ethan with State Charges: Attempted Murder, Felonious Assault on a Minor, Aggravated Kidnapping, and Tampering with Evidence. A federal magistrate signed an arrest warrant without bond. Ethan is currently being transported to the Franklin County Jail."

Tears of pure relief flooded my eyes. The nightmare was finally unraveling. The monster who had haunted my sister's life was behind bars, stripped of his freedom, his luxury car, and his slick lies.

"What about Maddie?" I asked frantically. "Where is she?"

"The County Prosecutor reviewed the alley security footage your brother-in-law provided three hours ago," Rodriguez said warmly. "All preliminary child endangerment charges against Madeline Vance have been formally dismissed with prejudice. She has been released from custody and is currently in a police transport vehicle on her way to this hospital."

I pressed my hands against my face, weeping openly. "She's coming here?"

"She's coming to see her daughter," Rodriguez smiled. "And then, she's going to stand in that courtroom at 9:00 AM and watch Arthur Vance's entire world burn down."
