Chapter 8 - The Reckoning of Tyler Vance

One year later.

Federal Correctional Institution, Cumberland.

Tyler Vance sat in the stark, concrete visiting room wearing a coarse orange prison jumpsuit. His hair was cropped short, his hands were calloused from forced labor assignments in the prison laundry, and his once-handsome face was lined with deep stress and bitterness.

Across the thick acrylic partition sat Arthur Pendelton, holding a stack of legal documents.

"I’m not signing it," Tyler growled, his voice rough and gravelly. "I won't sign over my parental rights."

Arthur looked at him with quiet, unbothered calm. "Tyler, you are serving a twelve-year federal prison sentence. You have zero income, zero assets, and a four-million-dollar restitution lien attached to every future dollar you might ever earn. Under Maryland law, your parental rights can be terminated based on your criminal conviction and child abandonment."

"They are my kids!" Tyler spat, slamming his hand against the partition. "They carry my blood! Clara can't just erase me from their lives!"

"Clara isn't erasing you, Tyler," Arthur said coldly. "You erased yourself. You erased yourself when you turned off your phone in Middleburg. You erased yourself when you stole from her mother’s company. You erased yourself when you tried to use those babies as financial leverage in a court of law."

Arthur slid a single sheet of paper beneath the slot in the partition.

"If you sign this voluntary termination of parental rights, Clara will agree to waive any civil claims against your remaining personal estate, ensuring that your elderly parents in Ohio won't be dragged into third-party asset recovery lawsuits."

Tyler stared at the paper. His hands shook as he picked up the cheap plastic pen provided by the guards.

"How... how are they?" Tyler asked, a rare, genuine crack appearing in his bitter exterior. "The babies... how are they doing?"

Arthur paused for a moment, adjusting his glasses. "They are thriving. Ava is walking. Noah is talking up a storm. Miles is healthy and strong. They live in a home filled with love, security, and peace. They have a mother who would move mountains for them, and a grandfather who adores them."

Arthur looked directly into Tyler’s eyes. "They don't know who you are, Tyler. And they never will. To them, you are just a ghost who was replaced by light."

Tyler closed his eyes as a single, burning tear rolled down his cheek. The reality of his complete defeat washed over him. He had lost everything—his wealth, his status, his freedom, his pride, and his legacy.

He placed the pen on the paper and signed his name: Tyler Vance.

He slid the paper back across the slot, stood up without saying another word, and signaled to the prison guard to take him back to his cell.
