Chapter 10 - The Garden of the Stars

The lawn of our quarters at Fort Myer was bathed in the warm, golden light of a late spring sunset.

A large wooden table had been set up under the shade of a massive oak tree, covered in a white linen tablecloth and filled with platters of fresh summer food.

Arthur and Linda Hayes sat at the table, their faces relaxed and happy, their laughter carrying across the yard as they watched the twins.

Ethan was currently sitting in the grass, happily banging a plastic spoon against a small drum, while Grace sat in her grandmother's lap, her fingers tangled in Linda’s silver necklace.

Elena Ruiz sat beside me, a glass of iced tea in her hand, her eyes fixed on the historic monument skyline across the river.

"It’s a beautiful view, Claire," Elena said, taking a sip of her tea. "You’ve built quite a sanctuary here."

"I didn't build it alone, Elena," I said, looking at Arthur and Linda. "I had a great team."

Arthur stood up, holding his glass of lemonade aloft. "A toast," the old man said, his voice strong and clear.

We all raised our glasses.

"To our daughter, Claire," Arthur said, his eyes shining with a deep, paternal love. "A true commander, a wonderful mother, and the woman who saved our lives. May your future be as bright as the stars you are about to wear."

"To Claire," we all murmured, our glasses clinking in a sweet, harmonious chorus of peace.

As the sun sank below the horizon, casting a long, crimson light across the Potomac, I held my children close to my chest.

The battle was won. The ledger was balanced.

And as the first star of the evening appeared in the deepening blue sky, I knew that our story had finally reached its perfect, unshakeable command.
